1967 GE Dishwasher model:SD 201C1

I purchased this dishwasher from an individual that said it did not work as far as he knew. I am interested in getting it working correctly! I live in the Portland,OR area and have checked with several stores (City Appliance,Spencers)and cannot get a lead on somebody to check it out and fix it for me. It is a built-in model in turquoise color and looks great but I am very bad at mechanical things and don't know the first thing about how to hook it up and check what is wrong. If I have to send it somewhere I will but I would like it to be within a state or two if possible. Anybody with any ideas on getting it fixed? Thanks Al

Nice color !

Even though your pic is not that clear, the outside appearance of the machine looks good. Did you get any history on the machine? Did the person you bought it from have it hooked up?

When you say it needs fixing, do you know what is wrong? Have you tried connecting it to power? The more info you can share the better. I may be able to help you but just need to know a little more. Can you post some more pictures, especially of the interior and the mechanicals underneath?

I bought it from a gentleman that was going to use it in his house but was over road on that decision by his girlfriend. His loss my gain ( I also got a turquoise Fridgedaire fridge,4 burner cook top and a Fridgidaire oven). I am using the fridge and it works perfect and I already have a GE double oven and cook top combo. All I was told was the dishwaser did not work. He did not know what was wrong and never hooked it up to try it. I also have no idea how to hook it up to test it....I am sorry about the picture I have more but they also are from my Iphone. The condition is excellent it is clean and not covered in dirt in any way. thanks Al

If it was me, I would first make sure the float, which is thw piece in the front left of the inner tub,bobbles up and down making the sound of a switch. This is to both keep the tub from overfilling or underfilling. The switch turns the intake valve on and/or off.They have a tendancy to come off during shipment on their sides or upside down.Then, I would put a rubber cap or shove a paper towel into the drain piece located just under the pump.Then, I'd take a regular three wire 110 volt long appliance cord and hook it up correctly.I would then pour about 5 gallons of hot water inside and set the timer in the begining of the main wash, plug the unit in, close the door and hope the motor comes on.You'll know imediately from the noise the water makes whether it works or not. Then, I'd set the timer to drain the water out and be sure the pump and motor reverse and the water pumps out freely.Just be sure to remove the pump cover. If it's good, it may pop the cover off by the force it has.I recomend doing this out on the driveway in case it leaks and to let the pump drain the water out.Have fun!!

Missing wire

In this picture here I see there is a terminal that appears to be missing its wire. I'm not sure what this goes to (turquoisedude or dishwashercrazy probably know) but I'll bet there is a loose wire hanging somewhere in there that should be connected to this. 'laundromat' gave some good advice for testing but if you aren't completely sure of what you are doing then ask for more help and I know others will chime in. I may be able to help you in person after the holidays pass and it does sound like you've got yourself a nice complete vintage kitchen there from what you've described. I'd love to see it in person.

My Grandmother's Machine

She had that exact model in a Portable.Wasn't a bad cleaner but with no Power Shower it is a "Yibbler".Reversing Pump, Bare Bones, BOL.
But Great condition for it's age. 1967-68 ?

Thank you for your suggestions and information.....I will try to do as Laundromat suggests and Patrick like I orginal said I am not good at mechanical fixes. So I would love the help and can show you what I have here at the house. My stove and fridge I have down at mancave in Brownsmead,OR where I have gone also with a 1950-1960 them for comfort. GE BUILT-IN DW

Your DW is the last of this style machine with a real motor for GE. It would be some where around 1965-1966, GE started to change to the cheap shaded pole motor in 1967. These were ok DWs in thier day and it would sure beat not having a DW but there are much better classic machines if it is going to get much use or if you value top performance from your appliances. This DW does fit in with the great GE stove and cool Frigidare refrigerator that you have, but if it were me I would find a classic Kitchenaid DW from the mid 1960s-the mid 1970 and just spray paint the front panels turquoise. Very few parts are available for these GEs and they were fair to poor performers unless most dishes were rinsed.

 

The blue plastic float does lift out on these and the missing wire on the float switch terminal may go to the water inlet valve. It may be best to get an appliance technician to look over and test out the machine if you don't want to do this your self. Good Luck and let us know how it works out.

Five gallons is way too much water to try to put in this machine; you will have water overflowing the tub lip at the front and you don't want to do that and get wiring wet. For what you want to test, if you are going to test it yourself, enough water to cover the heating element would be sufficient. If you are in the water-wasting habit of rinsing every bit of food off everything before loading it into the machine, you will be happy with this dishwasher. As an alternative, you could take a paper towel or napkin and wipe the food off plates before loading. If you put bowls or saucepans in the lower rack, don't place small items like cups or glasses above that area in the top rack because they won't get washed. Keep plastics out of the lower rack; these machines get quite hot during the dry cycle. If the lower rack is the only place some plastic items will fit, remove them after the last rinse to prevent damage.
