1969 Hover Washer ????

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That's a typical twin tub (aka Twinnie) washer.  I believe Maytag had these under the brand name too.  Maytag supplied the dryer for both Hoover and Maytag u.s. products.

Hoover dryers were made by Hoover, not Maytag. A quite common misconception as they shared some very similar design characteristics - front heater and rear filter/blower. The Maytag was a better built machine overall. I really liked the Maytag I had in my apartment in Phoenix years ago and knew of a couple of those little dryers that ran for many years almost non-stop.

In many ways, the Hoover was a larger capacity washer and a bit easier to use than the Maytag. The "Auto-Rinse" in the Hoover was a plus over the Maytag, plus had a slightly faster spin speed. Maytag still had Hoover beat in the build-quality, galvanized cabinets, etc.

Color Matching Fun

This is a hair newer than 69, at least the one in the photos. it's late 1970 through 1972. For a while Hoover would let you mix the colors on these, I've seen green/brown and yellow/green. Interesting looking for sure. Somewhere around 72/73 they became unified color schemes, yellow/yellow or green/green etc. I use one of these, a 1974 Yelllow/Gold T1003 and it does the job. I also have the matching little Hoover dryer (D910, 1970). Pumps are the biggest failure point on these really. The model plate on this one should be like 0516 or 0514 or something like that.

On the topic of the dryer above, the Hoover and Maytag are similar, the main difference is really the blower setup. The Hoover uses a direct drive blower in the rear (double-sided motor like a Whirlpool). It does however incorporate a halo-style element in the front, but its wider in diameter and a little farther from the drum. Also the dryer is a little more flexible than the Maytag offering a 30 minute fluff cycle and utilizing a 5 minute cool-down at the end of the dry cycle. The drum is galvanized on the Hoover vs. porcelain on the Maytag. Sheet metal on the Maytag is a little higher grade as is the paint and coatings as Greg said. They both utilize the same drum felt bearing setup, and I'd wager things like the NLA drum belt for the Hoover could be substituted with a Maytag part. Both are good dryers, in my experience the Maytag gets hotter and requires less dry times. A small laundry basket, or 2/3 drum capacity for these takes 60 minutes to dry in the Hoover and 45 minutes in the Matyag. These both utilize a 3" vent.

Hey Wes, did you pick up this little 'oovah? If everything is working, they are great little machines and can go through mountains of laundry pretty quickly.

For reference here are photos of the Maytag A50 and Hoover 0515 washers I have, as well as a 10 minute video with each one in action.
