Hoover dryers were made by Hoover, not Maytag. A quite common misconception as they shared some very similar design characteristics - front heater and rear filter/blower. The Maytag was a better built machine overall. I really liked the Maytag I had in my apartment in Phoenix years ago and knew of a couple of those little dryers that ran for many years almost non-stop.
In many ways, the Hoover was a larger capacity washer and a bit easier to use than the Maytag. The "Auto-Rinse" in the Hoover was a plus over the Maytag, plus had a slightly faster spin speed. Maytag still had Hoover beat in the build-quality, galvanized cabinets, etc.
