What are the odds to find a lightly used matching 1970’s Whirlpool washer and dryer in Victoria, BC, Canada! Appears to resemble closely to the Brady Bunch Whirlpool Set. The washer and dryer came from an estate sale. The dryer has been in storage in the basement for about 50 years (maybe 2 months of use). The washer appears to have about 5 years of use and was in storage for the last 20 years. The washer has a pump and magic lint filter leak. Despite the owner was a heavy smoker, the washer and dryer are in very good condition. Too bad the set has a horrible tobacco smell and a thick yellow film, though the film may have protected the control panel/cabinet/paint finish.

Nice Whirlpool Belt-Drive Set.

But now, the dryer?

I love the Full-Width Door on this one, but one in the Brady house has a Centered Swing Open Door, doesn’t it?

That's correct Charles, and their washer had only rotary knob controls. Also the Bradys Whirlpool agitator had the white cap on it, as it was seen in the episode "The Great Earring Caper" (if I have the episode name correct), where Cindy loses one of Carol's earrings and it winds up mangled in the washing machine. The cap was sitting on the dryer top as it was removed from the agitator so Alice could lift it to get the earring trapped underneath.

These models must be the next ones up the line from the Brady pair.

Have a good one,
James

1969 through 71 whirlpool, washer and dryer

Wow, that Hass to be one of the finds of the year, to find a matched pair, and that condition is absolutely amazing, as we say it’s amazing what is still out there.

A picture of the model number plates we can tell exactly how old they are to me. It looks like they’re 1969 models and I could be off a year or so,

The self cleaning filters in the washers occasionally with split and leak, I think they’re readily available if you can’t find one I have lots of them new in the box.

Yes, we need more pictures. Maybe even some videos when you hook them up.

John.

Model and Serial Numbers

Attached are some photos including the name plates. This weekend the real fun begins! I will start stripping the washer and cleaning the tubs, replace seal, and replace the pump.

Rust

Yay, found my spanner wrench! Now I can expose the truth of the washer...RUST.

The spin tube post has some significant rust, I have seen worse. The basket and outer tub rust appears to be only surface (looks worse than it is).

I expect the owner kept the lid closed after each load and/or the washer was left with a tub full of water for extended time (the pump was seized - ability to easily gravity drain was probably not possible).

Encouraging to see the agitator shaft is polish with no wear or corrosion (like new). The bearings appear to be in good/near new condition. I will pull out the transmission and inspect the seals, add some turbine oil.

I have some fun work to do this weekend. '

Well the cabinet is in great shape. To me that is the main thing for rebuilding a belt drive. Of course almost every one I work on these days has a bad center post. That’s to be expected after 53 years as these machines weren’t built to last that long. I don’t think water sat in that machine for a long time because the inside of the basket would be destroyed. There was just a lot of iron in the water that was run through that washer through the years. Hopefully you’ll have good luck with center post not being rotted through. That washer has the same timer as my 1971 whirlpool imperial 80. Can’t wait to see your good results with this machine. Hopefully yours has the fluorescent control panel lighting.

Oooo that is a very nice set you got there! I've been looking for a nice BD set but I've never seen one for sale in my area, and I lack the ability to travel long distance for one. Lucky find!

The fun begins!

Good news, the 54 year old transmission and spin tube assembly is near new condition (very little wear), the spin tube center post rust has not rusted through...rust is surface (nothing that industrial sealant can't fix).

The challenge is both the inner and outer tub rust (the enamel is rough..in time it will rust through). Appears to be iron rust from the water (owner probably had well water).

I have two other Belt Drive washers (early 1960's Inglis and early 1980's Kenmore).
The Inglis washer is my next project...hoping to find a black whirlpool agitator cap. The Canadian made Kenmore washer is in bad condition (will be stripped for parts) and I am debating using tubs (however, I rather hold off until I find something that is the same era/age of the Whirlpool washer).
