1970 downy commercial

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I LOVE...

Watching these older tv commercials. Some I don't remember seeing, some I so remember, and others are faint hazy impressions that get jolted in my mind.

those short-shorts

No idea what people wear playing tennis these days. My preferred form of exercise is a good, brisk sit. But I will say I honestly thought for a moment those shorts might be underwear...

Not only do I remember that commercial, I was roughly that kid's age in 1970, LOL!

So are there any photos of a younger Frigilux proudly wearing his static free tennis sweater? (For that matter, maybe this ad was memorable because it was filmed at Frigilux's house. LOL)

Remembering old ads

I'm actually surprised at how many old ads/ad themes I can remember from when I was growing up in the 70s/80s. What makes it seem strange, I guess, is that we were not a huge TV watching family.

Lord K-- No photos of a young Frigilux in his tennis sweater are extant. Dress and/or athletic shorts of all kinds were quite revealing by today's below-the-knee standards. The two most obvious giveaways the commercial wasn't filmed at my house: 1) Every item therein was not purchased at Sears; 2) No halo of pot smoke surrounds our tennis-sweatered teen.

And now, I'll join you for a nice brisk sit.[this post was last edited: 9/9/2017-21:37]

The one commercial i remember seeing...

When I was really little, was that early 70's whirlpool portable washer commercial, where the wife kept rolling it around and making the husband have accidents. I don't think I knew what it was about but I seem to remember thinking the man accidentally threw his pizza in the garbage. And I thought that was so funny back then. It works always make me laugh. And also the light bulb falling to the floor. I remember that part too...
LOL
:oD

Ok, now officially feel "old".

*LOL*

Remember that Downy commercial as well from childhood/early teens.

More is the pity P&G changed the smell of Downy from the original 1970's scent.

Mother Dear wasn't big on FS, but when she did splurge it was Downy. On occasion she also picked up Final Touch (with bluing for extra whiteness), and or the "pink stuff". Think the latter was Bonnie or something Scottish. IIRC it came in huge gallon or so jugs and was much more fluid than Downy.

Oh wait, I told a lie; the other "pink stuff" FS was Sta-Puff which confusingly came in blue as well.

Also remember when Bounce and Cling Free came out. Mother Dear wasn't having any of that though.... *LOL*

Anyone remember free and soft that stuck to the inside of the dryer?  My mother used to buy it.  I thought it was neat because it was kind of hard and crunchy until the dryer got hot, then it softened like gum inside it's protective package but the softener would come through the pack and onto the clothes.

Launderess, I remember the "pink stuff" too...here it was usually a store brand.  We always shopped at Food World/Brunos and their house brand was "Staff".  Mother would buy that gallon of pink stuff to use on my dad's and my new blue jeans because we could dump in quite a bit without breaking the bank.  She didn't care for Downy because it makes the towels so fluffy they just smear water.  My grandmother, on the other hand, would practically drop the bottle in the washer.  Her towels were so soft they would not dry up the water!  I tend to lean the my mother does.  I use Suavitel or something for towels and reserve Downy or Gain or Snuggle for regular clothes.

Pierreandreply4...

YES!
Haha haha haha...

That is the commercial I remember seeing on tv when I was really little. And getting such a good laugh at the man dropping his pizza in the "garbage"!
LOL...
;oD

Launderess...

YOU AREN'T LYING!

it is such a shame that the DOWNY doesn't smell like the original 70's "APRIL FRESH" scent anymore!
I actually sent an email to the company asking them if they would bring back the ORIGINAL scent of DOWNY. I got a reply from them sadly, saying that there were no plans of doing that at the moment.
:o/

Hell, even if they brought back the ORIGINAL scent for a limited time offer, I personally would buy cases of the stuff, to have it on hand when I did laundry!
And I wouldn't have to hunt for the old bottles of the stuff on ebay at outrages prices. And I wouldn't feel guilty using the vintage DOWNY that I do have!

Only if they would bring back the original 70's "APRIL FRESH" DOWNY scent...
:o(

Final Touch

Laundress mentioned Final Touch, and that's the scent from childhood I remember best, and would be in heaven to have a fabric softener with that scent again. I do still use the current version of Final Touch, because I like the scent and performance better than anything else of current vintage I've tried. But every time I open a new bottle, I still keep hoping for the original scent!

Well, as we're reminiscing about fabric softeners, remember Rain Barrel?  I'll bet a turquoise mixer that THIS is the residue that clings to agitators of 70s machines... LOL

Video quality is not great, but that's the commercial I remember seeing.  And it must have been convincing.. my mother (who believed it was 'Downy or die' when it came to fabric softeners) switched to this and used it religiously until we got a fabric softener dispenser for the ol' Viking washer!
