Sadly cationic and nonionic with or anionic surfactants don't play well together. Even Consumer Reports stated fabric softener was best in the rinse. RB didn't last very long IIRC, likely because of such related issues.
What does work well enough as a fabric softener in wash is clay (bentonite).

Colgate-Palmolive used in their Fabric Softener Fab powder detergent, and Fab "One Shot" detergent packets.
Today of course clay as fabric softener is everywhere. Those crystals by Purex and others for a start.
