1970s bench top dishwasher UK

Doe any of the UK guys remember a cylindrical shaped dishwasher that had a clear plastic dome that fixed to the base of the unit? When it was working you could watch the wash action. My best friend's Mum had one that sat on the draining board. I used to love watching it washing. Never seen one like it ever since.

we had them in the US as well back in the 70's. My scout masters wife had one.
I thought it was odd and wasted water. It connected to the hot water faucet, and the pressure drove the spray arm. You had to put it next to the sink, as it had a drain and the water poured out of it the entire wash time.
I think it had a rather large soap dispenser, so it lasted long enough to wash the dishes.
I never saw one in any store. When I asked where they got it, they called me weird. So I bragged about my moms Lady Kenmore dish washer with a butcher block top. Then they said, my family is strange, for having that, but no color TV set.
What ever.
My parents believed in books and parochial education, not watching much tv.

Morning Simon, am racking my brains trying to think of which one you mean? we had the table top Asea, Bendix and those slide out box Homark, Servis and Philips - you dont mean the Electrolux that Richard has with the viewing window?

Hows the Aus Laundry coming along? any new exhibits?

Is it this Lylybet dishwasher?

My Mum and I went to London shopping for a day out on the train, goodness when I was small (perhaps about seven) and we went to Selfridges (amongst other stores) and as she knew I loved appliances we went to that department where I picked up this brochure and saw this strange machine for the first time. I can't recall a lot about it except I thought then it was quite big for a draining board! Never seen one since. Hope this is the one you mean. Cheers, Alan

Before we bought our GE Pot Scrubber in 1976 we had a Carrocelle we bought at Two Guys department store for about $80. It was ok but did use a lot of water, used just hot water and regular dish soap. It got very sudsy inside so it took a while for it to finally rinse out all the suds. I would take original Cascade and dissolve it in water to use to wash the dishes. Found some pictures off the internet of it.

Thanks guys for your replies and Andy yes, the Lilybet is the exact dishwasher. Love the brochure. Brings the memories flooding back. The US version looks similar, lots of interesting information.

I just got back from Japan and they do not have regular dishwashers, only small bench top models. They have some strange appliances that I think circulates warm air around hand washed dishes to help dry them. Difficult to know for sure as everything written in Jappanese.

Thank you Alan for sharing the brochure. I remember something similar being sold overhere in the Netherlands, but IIRC, it was a bit different. I believe it had only one dial on the front, which was black, but the dial had more or less the same form. Perhaps the model I remember was a bit flatter or fatter, less elegant than in this brochure. Did this Lylybet have an older sister model?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the YouTube of the Electrolux Dishmaid. Never seen one of those before. Looks like a nifty little machine. Pretty advanced for 1961, 55 years ago. Wow!

Aussie Landry rooms doing well. I treated myself to a new F&P Washsmart TL which is so quiet even on spin. I had to let the Westinghouse Laundromat go to make space which was a little sad. Keeping my eye out for an old classic but they are very few and far between down here in Australia. I did get hold of a spin drier from South America una seca ropas. Spins at just under 3000 rpm. Great for spinning extra dry before going in the dryer. You can see it next to the Simpson washer in the corner.

I continue to be very jelous and impressed with your collection Mike.
