1970s Creda frontloader, UK

It's been great to find this wonderful site and meet like minded people. I'm from London and am really interested in the history of our autowashers and their evolution, particulary front-loaders.

As a child a neighbour of my gran had a Creda autowasher, frontloader which fascinated me. It had a fairly fast loud spin, not unlike NickUK's Hotpoint 18580. It had a square door, similar to the mid 80s Hoovers and 2 large dials and about 4 buttons. It was bought about 1978. Does anyone know what this might be?

I have attached an advert from 1978 which I hope may be of some interest to you all.

Two possible answers

Hi there Rob, welcome to the club

I have two possible machines that could fit your description. They don't have sqaure doors however which might render them a bit useless but they could still be correct. First of all is the Debonair range which i have no knowledge about, i just know they were produced late 70's, early 80's. Here is a link to the instruction manual which has a picture of the machine. next is the Concord machine. My nieghbours had one of these before updating to a Creda Supaspeed. It was there when i was born so i guess it was made early 80's.
Hopefully these give you an idea of what the machine your looking for might be.

TI Creda Rhythm Spin

Yes I remember that one well my cousin owned one; it was late 70 early 80's model which if I remember correctly it was called Super De Luxe Electronic or Debonair De Luxe Electronic. It washed a 4.5Kg 9Lb load and featured Creda's unique Rhythm Spin which was supposed to improve water extraction and reduce creasing.

The Rhythm Spin started with a series of slow short spins with a reverse tumble cycle after each to fluff the load, the spin speed was gradually increased with each spin up to the final speed of 1000RPM which was held for several minutes. The Rhythm spin cycle took around 25 minutes to complete.

Another thing I remember about this machine was its motor which was unusual in that it had only one stator winding; the stator itself was shaped like a Horse shoe. The motor was made by a company called Electric Motor Developments which still exists today.

Hopefully someone might have a pic of it. I have attached a Creda advert from Jan 1979. It's for a dryer but a machine similar to the one I desribe is next to it but you can only see part of it.

You certainly have an impressive collection of literature - thanks for sharing.

I used a mind eighties Creda machine which my aunt and uncle still have - and it also does that 25 minuted final spin thing. They live in Blythe Bridge near Stoke which is where the Creda factory is. Even seeing your picture above the washer does not ring any bells, though the dryer is familiar and especially the compact version of it.
