Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

That rangette is quite cute. Sears never offered anything like that electric for cooking that was not 220 volt to my knowlege on this side of the border. Bet it took some time for that rangette to heat the oven up on 110. Do they even offer gas ranges? All the distant relatives of mine from the Maratime Provinces all have electric and say gas ranges are very few and far between.

Gas ranges were indeed uncommon in most areas up here in 'Canadia'....  Though in the larger cities (Montreal and Toronto, for example), gas ranges were almost the norm especially in the older apartment buildings.   Rural regions were generally well-served in terms of electrical supply, so it was no surprise electric ranges were more popular.   In the really rural areas (like where I am down in Ogden) they even had combination wood and electric ranges to keep you from starving if the power went out... LOL

Side heater ranges

This side of the border gas was the norm. Before natural gas became available, there was pipeline "city" gas in the more populated areas and the rest used LP tank gas. 99% of those with side heaters used kerosene. I dont ever recall seeing one with wood grates. Growing up, we had a huge Kenmore gas stove with the side kerosene burners and a big copper hot water tank behind it. Eventually a new Sears Homart gas water heater was installed in the basement and a new Kenmore 30" gas range. Boy did that kitchen seem much bigger after that.

Electric Kettles

Something I never saw at Sears here. They always kept a kettle of water on the back of the kerosene end heater for their tea and instant coffee (Yuck), I still have my mothers old Powermate wand in green in the basement for cleaning there, just like those in the catalog. I do have some 1980's Sears catalogs in the garage attic I will dig out and post when I can get to them. One has the last wringer washer Sears ever sold.
