Has anyone ever tried, cleaning, black walnuts?

Every year we get quite a few from the several trees around the property here but this year was a huge bumper crop. I’ve never seen so many you can’t even walk without sliding and tripping on them, so I was doing some research and trying to figure out how to clean them I figured the best way would be to use an old GE combination, washer dryer or something close and I have an extra 1989 white Westinghouse front load machine. It took it out to the driveway last weekend and cleaned hundreds of black walnuts. I hooked it up to the garden hose, which is on half price submeter water and went to town. I think I did nine loads in the machine.

Has anybody else ever harvested black walnuts? Do you age them or roast them or anything?

That’s a lot of Black Walnuts John, good for you harvesting them and cleaning them! I’ve never personally gotten walnuts with the shin still on, but I bet they are really good.

I believe that freshly harvested nuts in the shell should remain fresh for maybe 6 mo or longer if kept in a cool, dry place.

My Aunt Nadine lived in Mississippi and they had several Pecan trees. She used to send us fruitcake tins filled with shelled Pecans every Christmas and they were a real treat.

If you have more than you can use or give away you can shell them and keep them a year in the freezer in an airtight container.

Now bake something good or put them in a nice salad.

BTW,I like the ‘89 Westinghouse FL. We had an ‘87 model just like it for 7 trouble free years and sold it with the condo. It was one of the things the buyer particularly wanted left in the home at closing.

My walnut tree also went crazy this year, after hardly any last season. I picked up about 30 a couple weeks ago before mowing, and the yard has way more now, and the tree still has some on it. I'll probably pick them up in the next few days, but not sure what I'll do with them all. A couple years ago I gave most to a friend, so probably will give him some of these.
