Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Hi,

Mine is the Lavamat 72640, purchased in Sept 2002, still going strong.

The machine is nice and quiet and cleans well and has the 'jetsystem' to help clean and rinse the clothes along with spins during the rinses.

My machine takes around 2 hours to do 60 degree cotton wash (the rinse cycle time varies with quanity of clothes, less time for big load and more time with less absorbent items).

My only gripe is the machine spinning when heavily unbalanced and the drum smacking the glass door. We have some nice marks on the door from this happening.

Does your Hotpoint complete a cycle within 1 hour? I remember the old Hotpoints sounding the same as our old 80s Servis Slimline 1000 with the growling motor.

Dishwasher

I don't know anything about that range of washers that Electrolux made but the dishwashers were superb. My parents bought one in 1993. It was TOL and had loads of really useful functions and features and a cutlery basket that could be moved across the whole width of the bottom rack. It went on every day and 3 or 4 times at weekends and lasted 15 years before it developed a problem. Wish I could find one nowadays!!

Long cycle times

I never use the long cycle times on my zanussi electrolux

the only washes I use are Cottons 30,40,50,60 but press the quick and superinse buttons together and the washes go from 2.07 and 2.08 to 1.03, 1.04, 1.17 and 1.19. much better and stuff gets clean with a small amount of Persil washing powder I'm using.

use the synthetics washes too on quick, and they take 50 mins for a 30 degree wash and 56 mins for a 40 degree wash.

i don't see why we need to wait ages for a cycle, as the longer the wash the more wear and tear it gives your clothes.

short and cool washes are good for my clothes, with a very small amount of powder and conditioner.

Love those electroluxes, my friends mum had one second hand the EW901, 900rpm model. lasted ages and still looked brand new, shes got a haier washer now, its crap.

I want an electrolux, gonna see if i can find one, and keep it in storage till i get my flat :D

Electrolux Dishwashers,

My parents had the Tricity Bendix version DH101 from 1994 til 2006 which performed without fault until I stupidly suggested they have my Hotpoint dishwasher and scrap theirs due to its age.

Would they still have had it if I had not of suggested?? Who knows. Its certainly been their most relaible one yet. Their first a 1988 Indesit lasted 6 years before the Bendix came along.

They have certainly have had their troubles worth with the new Kenwood one!

The racks in the Bendix were not as ellaborate yet they managed perfectly well with all kinds of loads perfectly.

It also seems that they have had great lifespans of Lux appliances out of the ones they have had.

In the years of having an Elux washer not only did they have a Tricity Bendix dishwasher but also a 1995 Free standing Parkinson Cowan Ovation 60Gla Dual Fuel cooker which was only replaced at 6 years old due to having a new kitchen installed that made way for the Kenwood cooker they still have now.

Only the fridge and chest freezer were not Electrolux, that was a LEC TurboLarder and Elcold respectively.

my washer and dishwasher from the Electrolux Group =]

Just thought i'd put some pictures of my zanussi washing machine and tricity bendix dishwasher =]

first is my Zanussi FJS1225W bought in October 2001 from John Lewis for £329, will be 9 years old this year, which for a modern machine is pretty good.

As i mentioned earlier it does get an E90 error come up on occasion, but other than that everything is good, washes well on short cycles that we set it up for on low temps, even at 30*c

my dishwasher

Next is my Tricity Bendix dishwasher bought from Argos in June 2005, but installed in October 2005 when our kitchen was replaced. My friend got me discount on this dishwasher and it only ended up costing me £149, it was originally £299

very good machine, and its unusual as its a Tricity Bendix yet has a push button control system instead of a timer, which is interesting as aeg brought out a dishwasher like this with the same layout of the controls.

Its a very good machine, we always use eco 50 and it does a smashing job at cleaning the dishes, and for our first ever dishwasher.

Is 5 years old in June, and still going strong.

WELL DONE ELECTROLUX!!

I have always considered Electrolux products to be superior quality as in my experience they have always been well made, reliable as well as fit for purpose. Is that still the case given the various changes of ownership that muxt have taken place (Zanussi/AEG etc)?

Am I right in thinking that John Lewis branded white goods are AEG/Electrolux?

Nice brochure - I had a couple of Elux brochures I picked up when I was a boy but by then they had gone to the fold out style like the Zanussi brochures, so it's really nice to see a full brochure. Especially love the 1500rpm model, really smart.

Paul - the JL models are rebadged Italian Zanussis, still pretty good value machines though for what they cost - if I remember right last time I was there you could pick up a better spec 1400rpm JL model for cheaper than an equivalent Zanussi. The only thing I don't like about their range has always been their dishwashers - I've never felt in the past 10 years or so the racking has been up to scratch compared to the example in this brochure of the older Zanussi dishwashers, and we used to literally battle with ours everynight... weirdly enough the AEG which briefly replaced ours still had the AEG racks but otherwise the Elux insides and worked perfectly.

Zanussi made dishwashers

I never liked them, as they had design flaws.

Simple things would go, like the door springs, or the wheels on the baskets, or the cutlery basket would perforate, or the plastic upper spray arm would refuse to turn, or the corner of the control panel cracked and fell off.

Also, the doorseal channel was not properly designed: detergent and water solution used to bypass the seal and end up on the top edge of the steel door near the latch. This happened on two different models from 1994/95.

Cheers for uploading that Rob, a great range of machines. Darren will have had to take himself off somewhere private with those images ;)

A friend of mine who rented a house in Chester had one of the machines without Direct Spray, i think it was the EW1100F. This was in 2006 - i never realised it was from the early 90's, it looked like new. It only rotated one way, but this also happens to older Zanussis so i think it was a slight timer problem - my mate never noticed it till i pointed it out, so i can't have affected the wash much!

A Direct Spray machine came up on eBay a couple of months ago, sold for £77 i think.

Zanussi XC/IZ Machines -

Like Kyle's one, these are doing very well for modern machines i think. Mum's friend has one, which must be 7-8 years old & does alot of washing (her utility room is always full of washing) but has never had a repair. There's also alot of them on eBay and only the odd one appears to be broken, usually with worn bearings. Think it's safe to say theyre the last of the well made Zanussis tho - the next generation of machines (badged Aquacycle-Essential, Progress-Hydrosystem etc) & bearing the Electrolux name beneath Zanussi seem to mark the start of a dumming down of quality. Certainly not disasterous machines, but not up there with the XC/IZ's, it seems :(

Dishwashers -

Rob - what sort of problems have your parents had with the Kenwood diswasher? Are they made by Kenwood or by someone else on their behalf?

Kyle - Electrolux group do seem to mix & match the way they badge products i've noticed aswell. My mum has an Electrolux Premier Condensor dryer from 2000 and whilst the cabinet is very similar to Zanussi Condensors of the time, it's the budget Bendix version that shares the facia and controls with the E'lux version - strange as Zanussi kinda fits inbetween both in the range.

Similarly, our E'lux Premier washing machine (WM1200A) was very similar to a Zanussi Aquacycle of the same era, but the other Premier washer was a re-badged Tricity Bendix AW1053. It seems they do occasionally offer higher spec machines like your dishwasher in their budget brands & vice versa (like with the E'lux Premier washer that was a Tricity Bendix).

Rolls Rapide - i do know what you mean. I own a 2008 Zanussi Progress AAA diswasher & the top rack in particular is very poor. It's almost like the slots were designed and the didn't even try to fit plates or cups into them. They just don't hold stuff and there's always gaps inbetween the crockery which don't need to be there. My parents mid 90s Multirack DW907 was much better in this respect, with decent racks. However it's interesting to read your comment about the water bypassing the door seal, as ours always let a trickle of water out from the base of the door. It still works to this day - our neighbour has it now as we changed when we updated the kitchen, but it still leaks aswell, about 15 years after it began!

Zanussi/AEG Takeover -

Hoovermatic - I believe Zanussi were taken over by Electrolux around 1988, though im not sure if they also bought Tricity Bendix and AEG at this time or later on. It seemed that the quality of the machines remained very good throughout the 1990s but started dropping at the turn of the millenium. Zanussi still seem to offer better quality than other similarly priced machines, but as mentioned a little while ago, the XC/IZ badged machines seem the last of the long-lasting ones.

Tricity Bendix (budget) & AEG (quality) appeared to level out with Zanussi (mid-range) in the quality stakes as time went on, so in the last 5 years or so there seems to have been very little difference in quality between them, even tho AEG command a higher purchase price. It seems the extra money now buys you more features, but not a better made machine, which must leave a few AEG owners feeling abit short-changed. Tricity Bendix seems to have virtually disappeared from the UK market now, with Zanussis range spanning the budget and midrange, AEG being the more expensive brand & E'lux being the innovative brand.

Wow, what an essay. Hope you havn't all nodded off :S

Liam.

I recently loaded a friend's Zanussi dishwasher...

...and realised what I hadn't been missing!

I had a hell of a job finding suitable positions for glasses and large mugs: each time I pushed the upper basket in, the items slithered out of position.

It is a circa 2005 model. And it has "non-removable spray-arms". (Who in their life, ever heard of that?!)

Liam, Electrolux bought Zanussi in 1984, then A.E.G. in 1996.
However, Zanussi had been an A.E.G. contractor longer before they were in the same corporate

Those machine you have there are all zanussi made, no matter they are badged Electrolux, Zanussi or Tricity Bendix.

The different built quality depends of the different production plants. They made up a lot of people had complaints like yours and decided to take back to Italy (Solaro, close to Milan) also MOL and TOL freestanding models production

And here I was thinking the racks were just me being fussy :-). Two things I really hated abotu the top rack was that firstly you could only get 4 rows of mugs and glasses in - the middle row was far too narrow to fit anything but cooking utensils in, and also it offered no support for glasses, if you closed the top rack at anything more than a snails place and it was half full, tall glasses would always fall over. The bottom basket however was well laid out, not too different to Bosch machines.

One thing I always remember is the gunshot-like detergent dispenser, always made you jump even if you were expecting it!
