Much better!

The difference is like night (before) and day (now). It even makes the dark cabinets look a lot better; before, they just kind of disappeared into the walls.

My Aunt Doris lived in a house in Long Beach, MS from 1961 - 1963 that had white brick walls in the kitchen, with Turquoise appliances. It did look classy.

We have that brick in our kitchen mostly behind the stove and counters, I've been thinking about painting it, to brighten it up a little bit.

It looks great! Did you do it yourself? If so, how? Did you use an airless spray gun, like a Wagner Power Painter? Otherwise, I think it would have been difficult to hand-paint all that brick with a brush.

I would have liked a brick like pattern behind our counter. The problem here is that it looks like the previous owners overdid it, having it on ALL of the walls. Would have been OK if just 1 wall maybe. Just like today, on DIY network, they overdo it with those glass tiles everywhere.

Another thing, what was the designer thinking to put the refrigerator and the oven next to each other? I thought we had an energy crisis in the 70s. Would it be possible to locate the fridge somewhere else?

I am moving in in a couple of weeks, cant wait to get out God awfull overpriced apartment in Columbia

retropia === I hired a contractor and they did use a spray gun

neptunebob====== The oven in built into the wall and is about `10 inches from the fridge it looks closer in the picture. The house was build in 1961 the kitchen layout has been unchanged although the cabinets and appliances have been updated 4 times according to the daughter of the family that lived there since 1961

I am thinking with going with antique white cabinets but the walnut is growing on me , I may just reface the doors and put in a solid surface counter top and switch over to stainless appliances

That is beautiful.......bright and it stands out.......I would hope that a sprayer was used.......I just painted my basement block, by hand.....if I ever have to do masonry/brick again, its gonna be a sprayer.....

not so much about the fridge and ovens proximity.......I'm just concerned of the waste of space above and below, especially if its hollow.....consider the built in microwave, and below a warming drawer....

still....fantastic just the same......lets see more

Stainless or white appliances would look great in there,, better than black imho.

I think it would be sorta hard to clean that brick around the stovetop and behind the counters. Wonder how expensive it would be to have some stainless steel backsplash cut and formed to fit by a restaurant supply place?

The paint job sure did brighten things up.  Like Yogi said with the oven yo could put a MW in above it and then above that some storage cabinets and also below the oven cabinets.

Ala in all withthe paint job done you have a great start on redoing that kitchen from the old before z-brick to now.

Oven next to fridge

My kitchen was probably remodeled in the 70's and it also has the fridge nook right next to the wall oven. The wall oven is actually in a nicely done set of floor to ceiling cabinets, real plywood, you know. Anyway, the oven doesn't seem to put all that much heat out through the side of the cabinet (which forms the wall of fridge nook).

The biggest problem with the arrangement is that the other wall of the fridge nook is the kitchen wall, with a doorway about six inches away from the front of the fridge. This means that the right hand door on the sxs hits the molding on the doorway and can't be opened far enough usually to remove the vegetable tray. My solution is to pull out the fridge (it is on rollers) so that the fridge door opens into the wall doorway, when it's necessary to pull the crisper drawers for cleaning. Awkward but it works more or less. At some point I'd like to enlarge that wall doorway so that the fridge door always can swing into it, but it's at the bottom of a very long list of things to do about this house, well after plumbing and electric and flooring and exterior paint etc...

Anyway, yes, the white painted brick looks much better than that crazy quilt brick. The fireplace in my study/family room is also that "used" brick look, floor to ceiling, full width, but it's just a portion of the wall and it's not so bad. And it's more subdued than the brick in that kitchen.

NEWLY PAINTED BRICK WALLS

The re-coated walls look much better, good choice. The black appliances look great against the walls and unless you are going to upgrade to much better appliances { double electric wall oven and induction cook-top ] their is little reason to replace barely 10 year old appliances. Usually the worst color choice is white these days as so much of what you see on the surface of newer appliances is plastic and white ones discolor the fastest and generally look old dirty and old sooner, especially if you actually cook much.
