Hi everyone,

Thought I'd share the vacuums I acquired recently. The first is a Hoover Dial-A-Matic 1149, my first non-self-propelled model! I bought it on eBay from Al (Maytagluver). The handle is a bit wobbly (Fred S. told me that there's a solution for this...Jeff, any thoughts?) and I probably should grease the agitator bearings and replace the belt, but other than that it's in good shape and much easier to handle than the Power Drive version!

And here's the next one!! Earlier I heard that my uncle's (one of many) mother had an old Kirby that she wasn't using anymore, paid close to $1000 for it when it was new, and didn't use some of the accessories. I said yes, sight unseen. After it was brought home and I came home from school, I walked into the garage thinking it was another Classic series or Tradition, but imagine my surprise when it was a Kirby Heritage II Legend with the original documentation and the accessories sitting next to it in a Hoover Bagless box!!

I opened the box and found attachments a little dusty from sitting in storage, but in otherwise good shape. After cleaning everything off, it appeared as though most of the accessories indeed hadn't been touched, and the hose only appeared to have been used once or twice! The Rug Renovator nozzle is MINT...probably used only for a demo! The most used out of all of them is the floor brush...which is strange considering the hose is in such good shape. The extension wand and curved handle grip are missing, but it's not that important to me. There's also another sprayer attachment that belongs to a Classic III.

As for the machine itself, I had to oil the brush bearings and realign the mounting pin for the rug nozzle (it was mounted off-center when I found it). But for the most part, a thorough cleaning was all that it needed. The rug nozzle appeared to have been well-loved, as it was FILTHY...there were layers of caked-on dirt as well as string, hair, you name it on the brushroll! After a lot of elbow grease the rug nozzle and brushroll came clean. The motor looks good, although I still need to clean between the wheels. I had to vacuum out the bag assembly and clean it off, but it turned out great as well. The handle and cord are in GREAT shape...and another surprise, one of the wheels still had a protective clear sticker on it!

Finally, after a belt and bag change, I went ahead and fired the machine up, expecting it to roar loudly like my previous Tradition did. Not at all...this thing really PURRS! One of the quietest Kirbys I have ever used as you can actually talk at a normal level while it's running...quieter than my G5 even! I LOVE this machine so far...it's not as heavy as the previous models, and the streamlined nozzle as well as the Mini Em-tor are noticeable improvements!

And the best part is, after checking the original documentation I found out that it's a 1988 model like me! Purchased on April 23, 1988 for $864.00.

Well, enough ranting...here are the pictures! First, the complete ensemble...

Here's a close-up...the pictures really don't do it justice! The nozzle and power plant still have most of their original shine!

Yay for new vac aquisitions!!
The Heritage Legend II's my favorite for it's manoueverablitiy and like you say the sound of the motor. I like all the Kirby motor sounds but the Heritage does seem quieter, I've two of them and they both sound the same. I also think it's the nicest looking as well, black and silver with a bit of red.

Now what year is the Hoover, I'll guess early/mid 70's because it's green?

Re: Kirby Heritage II

Hi! Austin, I've got that very same Model Vacuum Cleaner, except I didn't get the Shampoo Attachments. Believe it or not, I bought mine around 1988, but off hand now, I don't know which Month, but I paid around $1,200.00 for mine, but also that might have been the total given that it was financed too. Some several years ago, I found another one just like mine, but without the Attachments. I went to a local Kirby Dealer and bought the Set for something like $39.00 plus tax. This one needs the Motor Shaft to be cleaned off, from a overheating Belt melting somewhat on the Shaft, so it hasn't been operated, except to see if it ran all right. It was a Trade-In at a Rainbow Rexair Dealership, that some Friends of mine owned and they knew that I liked Kirby's, so they gave me this Unit.

Peace and Happy Kirby Housekeeping, Steve

I have to say that the Heritage 2 is my favorite Kirby. Mine is the very first one, not the Heritage 2 Legend, just Heritage 2. It also has the older style nozzle. The only thing is that I need a need a new Mini-Emtor, mine is broken were at plastic behind the seal in the connector for the vacuum.
I would say the Hoover is mid to late 60s, buy the 70s the Dials were power drive. I could be wrong though.

I have the Heritage II Legend

Austin:

Great Vac - I love mine - bought it used in the mid 90's for about $200 with a trade (I could kick myself for trading in my Grandmother's old Kirby for it). Anyways I am happy to see you now have one!

Cool vacuums Austin!!!

Dial-A Matic 1149 - That model was made from 1971-1975, a LONG run, and as a kid it seemed like it was in the stores forever!
Yours looks like a later model, stick on medallion and lighter colored cord.
The colors are Bali green with light and medium taupe.
Whats the serial number? That can be found on the plate where the handle screw is located. I am guessing the serial number is over 300,000.

Kirby: That looks really nice, I have a Heritage II that I bought new in December of 1987, I paid $874.98 for mine with attachments and rug renovator. Nice cleaner, especially if you have flatter carpets. Mine has hardly had any use!

My parents received a Hoover Dial-A-Matic in orange as a wedding gift in 1967. My Mom's aunt gave all the nieces and nephews vacuum cleaners as wedding gifts, and always Hoover's. Ironic though, she had a mid 50's Electrolux.

Hoover .......

Austin, I LOVE that dial-a-matic, that is what I had growing up(ours was turquoise) and it worked GREAT for years with great suction. I love the color of yours too, I just painted my bathroom that color.

Dial-A-Matics

Polkanut: Your parent's DAM was model 1120 in pumpkin and seal griege light/medium/deep and was probably the best selling model of the DAM's. I still find 1120's, and suspect there are more than a few still out there and in use.

GregM: Your DAM was model 1140 and it replaced model 1120 in 1969. The 1140 featured the new height adjuster, and its colors were marine blue and seal griege L/M/D.
