2007 Admiral Set

This post is more for future reference than anything as this set really isn’t spectacularly notable other than that they are very dependable. What I found neat was the plastic wash basket. I believe these were only in whirlpool built admiral and crosley machines from when whirlpool bought Maytag until the VMW machines were introduced. I’ve never seen an admiral or crosley VMW machine so they may still have a plastic wash basket. All of the roper and amana machines that I saw built under whirlpool all had porcelain coated steel wash baskets. I was going to keep the wash basket from this machine swapping it out for a porcelain one because I’ve only seen 2 but someone wanted a good set so I sold these. I really didn’t check for sure but I think the bottom of the base of the agitator seemed shorter because of the contour of the plastic basket. I could be wrong.

Melvin, my partner in Alabama has this same Admiral set, but he bought it around 2010 or 2011 at Home Depot and it has the porcelain tub.

The last one I saw with a plastic wash basket was Crosley badged at an estate sale and I would’ve bought it but they wanted $100 for it and animals had ruined the cabinet on it to the point that the base frame was rusted in two.

The one I parted with also had a two speed motor even though the timer did not provide for 2 speed operation.

Melvin, the "2-speed" is just like a Maytag Fabric Matic--periods of regular speed agitation and soak on the delicate cycle.

I guess they had ceased production of the one speed motor by this time and they used 2 speed motors for everything including 1 speed machines in production. I know it’s been the norm for some time now from multiple manufacturers to replace 1 speed motors with 2 speed motors as a service replacement.

Do you still have this machine? the tech sheet and motor would give away the cycle sequence and speed involved. Whirlpool had many variations of fast/slow agitation in the normal cycle and fast/slow spin combos in the PP cycle. I remember around this period Whirlpool offered many one speed direct drives with a delicate cycle that was 10-15 seconds of agitation followed by soaks.

No it is long gone. The timer only allowed it to be one speed.

How do you know the motor was two speed?

The "2nd" speed was the Fabric-Matic type of agitation on delicate, short agitatoin and then soak. Spin on deicate was normal spin speed.

Talk about dumb questions, you know it is a 2 speed motor because it has a 2 speed motor.

 

The specs are listed on the motor tag, if it says 1140/1725 RPMs it is a 2 speed motor.

Admiral model ATW4475TQ0 ...

The original motor P/N is stated as 8528157.  Pics of a used specimen on eBay (with that number on the label) indicates it is a 2-speeder ... RPMs of 1,725 and 1,140.

8528157 substitutes now to WP661600, which is also 2-speed.

HOWEVER, the wiring diagram and timer sequence chart (W10118358 Rev B. which is also tagged for Estate ETW4300TQ0) indicates motor wiring for 1-speed.  Gentle Wash is intermittent agitation.

Right, did the OP actually look at the motor itself or is something else leading him to reach that conclusion? I'm not doubting the OP, just curious as to how he reached that conclusion. A two speed motor only run as single speed is an interesting piece of Whirlpool history.

Yes I know for a fact it was a 2 speed motor because I kept the motor and swapped it out for a true one speed motor. As mentioned above whirlpool quit making one speed motors and the 2 speed motors went on everything regardless of whether the machine was a true 2 speed or not.

I believe they've switched to the vmw on the admiral line as with the maytags and everything else they make as of late.

Neat! I guess Whirlpool thought it cheaper to just make one type of motor knowing the DDs would be discontinued. I know a lot of washer manufacturers made only a 2 speed timer, but on single speed models just jumped the low and high speed contacts together to run the single speed motor.
