24" GE FF WASHERS
Yes Robert we even have one, a 1966 2 speed mini basket model with a full width florescent light. In the later 1980s GE sold a 24" model here that was made in Venezuela that had a removable front panel and the motor and pump was located in the front left of the machine. On these machines the FF stream of water came into the washer at the 7 o'clock position. I sold one of these as a rebuilt machine a half dozen years ago to a property on Capitol Hill that is still going strong.

They existed for many model years but never made it into the brochures or catalogs to my knowledge, except for once in their 1966 catalog. They were promoted in certain areas like NYC where space was always a concern. I'd love to get my hands on one from 1961, 1962 or 63. Let me rephrase that, I'd KILL to get my hands on one. Whirlpool also made 24" BD machines that I used to see in their NYC showroom on West 57th Street. I used to wonder why, if they could make one of their regular capacity machines fit inside of a 24" cabinet, they usually came in the monstrous 29" width. I had friends who had a 24" Whirlpool in the sixties that lived behind the bathroom door of their coop.
I have not seen that 24 inch GE in many years, but I remember it had a bluish cast to the brushed aluminum on the control panel and I think it was made in Canada. The strange thing was at the same time John found a GE combo with the same bluish cast to the control panel. They were like a matched pair if you needed a no-vent dryer WITH A WINDOW!
The 24" WP BD machine (not the portable, but the regular 24" washer) did not have the same guts as the 29 inch. Just try putting the same size load in a 24" WP and you will see the difference. The tub is narrower and it fills with less water. It was like 7 or 8 lbs as opposed to the 9 lb capacity of the 29 inch machine. We found a nice one that I played with for a while, but turnover was poor for large items, even compared with a Maytag.

Yes Ken the 1966 GE WT3850B you found the specks for is the exact one that Tom and I have. But as Tom said about the 24" WPs the GE also had a little smaller tub and there was less room inside the cabinet of the WP or GE for out of balance loads to crash around in, so the larger machines were probably more satisfactory overall. However I agree these 24" washers were still much better than some of the little compacts that came out later. and it is too bad that they weren't promoted more.

The Hotpoint 24inch Top Loader, 10lb washload, Hot & Cold fill, 3kw heater, 1050rpm spin speed...many of these wherse sold in the 60`s to the 90`s and then they wher outlawed by the new EU Energy Ratings as high energy usage or a lower rating!!! I never knew anyone who used it from cold fill only,

Great machines, many are still working , certainly over on the east coast where a friend of ours has a repair business and services many farms etc with them still!!!

Cold fill toploader..
Hello My Ex wife had the newer version with brown push buttons I cannot remember the model number Sorry about that ! It was in her outhouse which had cold water only so it used to take a long time to heat up from what I recall it was at least a couple of hours for a 60c wash but to be fair it washed everything really well as good as todays long cycles on modern fl. Sadly the gearbox failed after quite a number of years faithful service and has been replaced by a Bendix FL.
