Hello all!

I have a 50’s Hotpoint dual oven. The ovens take a medium base bulb. 25w 125v.

I cannot find replacement bulbs anyhow, original are GE. Not burnt out yet. Just want replacements.

Most all I find online look decorative, etc. Where in the world would I find a bulb?

Thank you!

Fridges and freezers do well with the new LED light bulbs.

But I wouldn't risk one in an oven. It could melt. Small incandescent bulbs are the way to go with an oven. And, as already stated, wattage doesn't really matter, but I'd stay with 60 watts or less. Just because. Also, most ovens will work just fine without any light. It just makes it more convenient.

Sorry Keith! Many ovens--including mine do not have a glass shield. I've had many different stoves over the year and most do NOT have a glass cover over the bulb. My favorite stove from the 80's-- A Jennair grill range had no cover, nor had my GE Profile smooth top from 2013. My little 20 inch Amana today hasn't a bulb cover. The bulbs are always up in a corner and out of range of the shelves, so who cares?

Nearly every stove or oven I've had has had a bulb cover. I know the last one was a wall oven and it had a cover.

I remember using a self cleaning oven for the first time. It was late 60s GE and it had a window in the door and there was some shield your supposed to put up and I forgot. The window cracked. I would guess the same would happen with an exposed bulb.

Oven light Bulbs

Are usually 40 watts [ never saw a 60 watt oven bulb ] but it would work if it fit.

Self cleaning ovens almost always have a cover, but the bulb will not break if the cover is missing, it might damage the socket however.

Thermadors first SCOs did not use a cover at all and the self-cleaning cycle did not hurt the bulbs.

Hi Keith, you could not start the SCC on a GE [ or any other SCO ] without putting the heat Shield up.

Do not try putting an LED or compact Florescent bulb in an oven, the energy use of the LB is not important. as the heat of the bulb just helps heat the oven.

My '53 Westinghouse does NOT have any cover over the light bulb in the oven, and there has never been any problem with the bulb breaking. However, I do know that Westinghouse did have glass covers on some ovens. Friends of the family had a wall oven from around 1960 that did, and somehow they broke it. I remember going to the Westinghouse parts center sometime in the late 70's, and ordering it for them. I remember because they sent the wrong part first, which was a metal housing for the light socket. Had to reorder to get the glass cover.

Just another data point, there was a discussion not that long ago about the lower quality of incandescent bulbs today and how high temps were causing repeated failures in the bases. Changing to an older US-made appliance bulb solved the problem.
