U4127

That's a model U4127 and was the first of the plastic Convertible series. Those made their debut in 1977 or 1978, I believe... and were made for a good number of years. I've seen a TON of that model over the past few years, still out there and in service.

In my opinion, (if the base of the machine isn't cracked--the fan chamber), they were excellent performers. I used one for a while as my daily driver and was very pleased with it. Lightweight, easy to use, simple. And I like the color combination.

Oh, yeah...

For 3 bucks, I'd grab it. Give it a good scrubbin', put a new bag and belt in it, and you'll be good to go!

i sold one like that to a neighbor. used type c bags and had a steel lined fan chamber. the base often develops small cracks at the front corners, near the brushroll mounting. as with all convertibles, a very good carpet cleaner. make sure the brushroll isnt rusted. also see that the handle release is firm. the rear wheels/axle should also be checked. the cords strain relief is also vulnerable, see that the cord is firmly fastened. have i gone on too long? Bag Searching

I went out searching for bags tonight. I couldn't find any Hoover style C, but I found plenty of Eureka F&G bags. Will they work? If not, I guess I'll have to head downtown to the vac shop.
The vac is really in good shape. It is not nearly as quiet as I remember Convertibles being. Maybe because it's plastic instead of steel. The brush roll looks good. I plan to take it outside tomorrow and use my air hose to give it a good blowing. What do you guys suggest I clean the plastic with? Clorox wipes?
Thanks,
Tim

That's odd-

Hoover "C" bags, at least around here, in Hoover Country, are very available.

I get my Hoover C bags at the supermarket, at Target....

oh, and as for cleaning the cleaner,

always start conservatively, with lightly damp cotton towels and plain water. A lot can be accomplished with just a little "elbow grease."

Tim,

Great find for $3! How does the height adjuster work? Hopefully it's not stuck.

As for cleaning the machine, Windex and paper towels will work for the beginning! The half-hood comes off easily for access to the motor; there are screws underneath. Judging by how it looks, it will probably be a little dusty under the hood.

Was just thinking of this....odd!

My mom gave me their Convertible when I moved out. I had it until a few years ago when I gave it to the Vets. (Don't ask me what I was thinking, if I remember correctly, something broke on it but it could have been fixed I think). Mine was yellow. As you all probably know, it had an attachment that fit on the bottom that sealed off the airflow, and connected to a standard type hose with attachments. I still had all those items with it.

Now of course, I wish I had it back.

Runs great, BUT

it sure isn't a quiet machine. I didn't realize how noisy these plastic models were. Does anyone else think this, or is it just this machine. Tim

cleaning

Tim, Try MacGuires wax and cleaning cream for cleaning and shining up your Hoover. I get it at Target. If you have a TrueValue Hardware store or an Ace Hardware store they usually have Hoover C bags. Plus i find packages at the thrift stores all the time.

quiet-ness

The agitator bearings probably need greasing, that will quiet that down considerably.
A good cleanout will also help too.
I would also very closely inspect the fan. That machine is pre-6 blade fan, it would have the 12-blade black plastic fan used from 1977-83. Those were quirky fans, as the slightest imbalance will cause vibration, and the fan will eventually shatter.
I recommend swapping the plastic fan for a metal one, and replacing the brush roller with the CWP wooden one. You'll have a much quieter cleaner, and it will clean your rugs beautifully.

Try a local vac shop

maybe one thats been around a while. Of course I suppose a few of us probably have all the parts you'd need to make that Hoover purr....
Shoot me an email, and tell me how the machine runs: Smooth? Quiet? rattly, vibrates? rough?
I am sure I can get you set up.

Really Dirty!

I am working this weekend to try and get this machine clean. You wouldn't believe the hair, string, yarn that was wound around the brush and the impeller fan spindle. I will post pictures. BTW I am still looking for bags. Does anyone know if a Eureka F/G bags will fit this Hoover until I can order some C bags online?

ANY vac shop should have the C bags. if you dont want to bother with a vac shop there is another answer: eBay. ive used the CWP wooden brushroll Jeff mentioned, and i hate to admit it, but its a good quality option. i put the wooden ball-bearing agitator in a 6.5 amp Decade and i was surprised at how quiet the machine ran with the CWP agitator. i dont trust the plastic impellers also. ive heard some weird folks will put f&g bags in Convertibles. ive never had to since i have enough C bags to last me prolly my whole life! keep up posted.

F&G bags

Tim, don't put a F&G bag into that bag. I just bought an Orange Hoover convertible for parts and in the vinyl bag was a F&G bag. It was larger than the Hoover vinyl bag so it folded down on itself and dirt filled from the bag fill tube all the way down to the agitater. I mean packed solid. At first i thought the F&G bag was put in upside down as i've found several times but it was put in correctly, just didn't have enough room inside the Hoover vinyl bag to fully expand. I will send you some hoover C bags if you like. Let me know.

Can you believe.......

that I pulled all of this junk out of the vacuum tube of this convertible. I jammed full all the way to the fan. It's amazing that it didn't burn up. I had to use a wire coat hanger and my shop vac to pull all of this junk out. It was mostly white carpet fuzz, but it even had a dryer sheet wound around the roller brush.

And here it is

The convertible cleaned up and running like a top. I did find one bag of C bags at an old vacuum shop. I guess I lucked out. The roller brush is like new. I love the purr of the motor. What do you guys think of these C bags? It seems like all the dirt and dust will slide back down toward the fan when the machine is off. Anyway I promised pics so here they are. Thanks for looking. Tim

The one I found the other day was almost as bad not quite because I didn't have to go digging stuff out. I put on a new C bag and there was lots of airflow but wouldn't pick up the dog hair because the belt was so loose as soon as anything touched the roller it stopped. Need to go out and get a new belt and she should be fine. Other than that it's in perfectly good working order. I really have to wonder if people just toss them because they don't know or realize they have to change the bag and belts now again. BUT, those C bags are horrible things to change like you say all the dirts at the bottom so you have to be careful removing them.

trick to C bags...

Don't roll the spring up so far... the dirt is supposed to settle around the tube and not fall back into the fan chamber.
Tim you could do a type A conversion, OR use F & G bags in with the current vinyl bag as its certainly large enough to handle it.

the gussets of the bag expand and combined with the four or six inches of fill tube allow a fair amount of dirt to settle without falling out. when the convertible was introduced, paper vac bags were still fairly novel to most folks and dirt STORAGE was not part of the original design. today folks expect to be able to "fill" a vacuum bag. the C bag can hold a couple liters of soil before it starts clogging the tube. however, fine dust will often clog the pores of the bag first. my trick to changing the c bags is to turn the machine upsidedown and rest it against a wall, so the machine is "standing" on the handle. that way when you release bag there is almost no risk of falling dirt.

I have used "F&G" bags in mine with no problems-even BETTER than the "C" bag.Yes I have had to fold the lower part of the bag-will hold less dirt-but it worked for me.The "C" bags the vac has to blow incoming dirt thru whats already in the small C bag.The "Handi-Sacs" are even better.

to me, there is something wrong about using a Eureka bag in a Hoover Cleaner. in addition, by the time the dirt in a Hoover type C bag starts closing off the fill tube, you already have about two quarts of dirt. thats at least a months worth of soil in the average home. why save month old dirt, just change the bag.

The biggest reason I use the Eureka bags is because I have lots of 'em.Got a commercial sized box of 'em.Hoover "C" bags are hard to find here-I have an old pack of them that I am saving for my collection. At the Vac Hospital out here-they sell a "Bojak" Hoover bag that he used to repair a vintage machine-its has a rigid fill tube like a Royal B bag.Tried the repaired one in his store and its SUPER!The "Bojak" is an improvement in this case.Bill(the vac shop operator) commented that it is getting harder to get orig equipment Convertible outer bags because of the problems with Maytag.I beleive the one he got came from HESCO or ESCO.I am looking into getting some of those bags to use-but keep the orig ones for the collection.C bags are messy to replace-why go thru the giration of turning the machine uposide down to replace the bag and spilling dirt-also the inefficient design of the "C" bag.Even folded over I could get more into the "F&G" bag.
