Oh my God

Just got online and saw the news. What a terrible thing to happen. Robert, glad to hear you and Neal are safe as well as our other club members.

My prayers go out to the victims and families of this tragedy.

"positive spin" it figures. We'll see how the "conservative" owned media tries to downplay an event like this. lol

People are going to be asking, why wasn't more money spent on improvements here at home instead of on a Fake war.
Louisiana still isn't back to, ANYTHING.
I wonder how the tornado abolished town in what Indiana, I think it was a few months back, is doing?
ah, boy.

I'm at my crash pad in Bloomington. I had just arrived at MSP when I heard about this. It was on all the televisions at MSP. People were kind of just watching in shock.
Even though I have been on that bridge before myself, I don't often have a need to go over that way. Usually it's right from the airport to here and back again.
The news said that they were repairing potholes on the surface of the bridge last weekend, but that shouldn't have caused a collapse. The bridge is about 40 years old.
Over the past few years I have read articles about how the older bridges in this country are in dire need of inspection and repair.
I am glad to hear that so far all out MSP members are ok.

Ugh. An interview on now with a Latino. He was on the scene
and helping people. When the police/sheriff got there they
asked what he was doing. (He was on a part-time medical team
and a life guard.) No, he was not looting. What a question!

Robert...

Just got home and heard about the collapse. Glad you and Neal are ok. Thanks for keeping us all posted.

Be well.

Mike

And the national news has no clue. Nightline said this was
the highest traffic bridge in the state. According to MNDOT
information, it is not. (It is either 94 across the river
near the UofM or the 494 bridge across 35W in Richfield.)
Of course ABC is FOX-lite.

All is well here.....

I am touched by all of your email and posts, thank you so much! Everyone is fine on my end as far as I know. I began a new position three weeks ago and worked late tonight, after that I met a friend downtown. This is a major happening in the Twin Cities, that bridge had one of the best views of downtown Mpls anywhere. I have great memories of driving over it enjoying the beautiful skyline. All of the news stations are remarking about how few casualties there are so far, knowing there will be more but still amazed that the initial number is not much higher. We Minnesotan's will memorialize and find some good in this tragedy, that is what we do. My Mom (Maxine) always said that if you look hard enough, there is something good in everything that happens, even the bad and tough times. I believe this to be true but this will take some time.

Robert,

After hearing the news on t.v. during my break at work today I rushed and signed on hoping to see Unimatic1140. Thanks for posting the thread and letting us know you are o.k. I have only met you once at the 2005 Convention and treasure our little chats we had. Hope to have more washer talks in the future.... Thought and prayers to those effected by the tragady.

Jim

~Who are the engineers responsible for this?

I absolutely LOATHE the blame-game we play here in this country. Let's learn why it happend and prevent a reoccurance. The cause may be a combination of factors, perhaps no one individual, group or entity really did anything criminal. Just a thought.

There is money found for war, but not education and infrastructure.

scary stuff...

I'm out of the loop once I leave work, and was busy at church last night, so I first heard of this happening this morning.
Scary, and bridges freak me out, especially really high ones...

There is one bridge on the Ohio Turnpike(I-80) that I drive over every year when I go to visit North Canton, it spans the Cuyahoga River and is very high... I get a little dizzy and usually hold my breath as I go across! Don't know why I react this way, but its been the same for the 7+ years I have been visiting Tom.
I'm glad all of our friends in Twin Cities are safe and sound!

This is terrible. :-(

I was thinking about you, Robert. :-) Like Seamus, my little ‘radar ears’ listened out when I first heard something on the TV.

I caught this this morning on BBC News 24, one of the UK’s TV news channels. Mum told me about it.

The most important things are to support the bereaved, look after those hurt or in shock and to carefully and calmly find out exactly what happened.

All the very best to those involved and those affected in any way.

Carl

The "blame game"

You can call it what you like. Bridges and buildings should not just fall down. If they do, then someone should be held responsible for it. If things such as this are allowed to happen and no one is held accountable, then things such as this will become the norm. In some counties buildings and bridges do fall down, ferries sink, and nothing much is ever done about it. I am not ok with things like this happening in the U.S. I want to know what happened, and why? This type of thing is unacceptable.

Glad you and Neil are safe, Robert! You're the first person I thought of when I got the news.

Les

It's not MY fault..........

There may be a number of factors. If anyone gets put in jail as a scape-goat, that is not OK.

In my LIMITED opinion, rarely does an emotional response while an issue is hot lead to the best possible productive results.

As A Matter of Fact...

How many of these newer bridges were poorly designed, *and then hastily constructed,* to accommodate our growing desire to have our blankity blank cars and drive them, too!?--Laundry Shark

Our Tax Cuts at Work

I just made it to work. We can see the bridge (or we used to be able to see the bridge) from my office parking lot as it was about 1/4 or a mile away. Our office parking lot has been closed as it is being used for the MPD and MFD (Police and Fire Department) command centers. I had to park a few blocks away in the Guthrie Theatre parking lot, but our company says they will reimburse us for the expense. I had to keep my work ID out and visible just to get anywhere near this area.

A helicopter just landed across the street, maybe it’s our senators flying in from Washington. They are due in any time now.

All I can say about this whole horrible incident is thank the big 3-Ring Agitator that the bridge was down to two lanes on each side down from its normal eight lanes of traffic, plus the ramps due to major construction. Of course it hasn’t been ruled out that the construction was the cause of the collapse, but we will find out in time. Had it been a normal day on the bridge the tragedy would have been much worse.

Thank you for our tax cuts, who needs infrastructure when I have DVD's to buy.
