have had wringers in the past but never did more than just a clean up on them. found this for 40 bucks and the guy brought it over to the house. this thing has been sitting for over 20 years on a patio with a plant in it ugg but what ever. guess its just a good test for me to see what I can do. haven't gotten into it yet but I do know it will need new wheels for the legs and prob new rollers and a really cool red agi and not sure about the motor. what my question right now is how are the trans on these to work on im wondering if the trans is locked up cause I cant get the agi to turn even with the pull know pushed in?

well what a mess got the agi off in chunks ha ha but what I need to find is a good used motor for the machine if any one has one id like to buy it for sure

that black agitator....

i'm not too knowledgable on washers but, i don't think that was the right agitator for this washer? i could be wrong, but i'm just guessing, that it's not the right agitator cuz of the filter holes in the "stem" of the agitator. but i could be wrong. i'm sure someone who knows, will chime in & tell us.

by the way, nice looking vintage maytag wringer washer you have there!! it looks like it's in pretty good condition!!

yea its the wrong agi but that one is now gone it fell apart due to a huge crack and a hammer. oopps anyway i have one just like it in the garage that can be used till i find the right one for the machine. im really on the hunt for a motor.. any leads??

NO, NO, No!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT BREAK APART THAT AGITATOR!

That is a very rare agitator, very hard to find these days and if you don't want it, I can guarantee you somebody will want to pay significant bucks for it.

Cover it with lots of towels, especially around the base and keep filling the tub with boiling water. Allow the thing to soak and warm up for many minutes, then when it is cool enough to handle, try pulling it out.

OH WOW !!

It sounds like the lint filter agitator is now history. That is a total shame since they are harder than hens teeth to find. I hope I am not understanding that it is history. That was the most valuable part of the Maytag.

Not Incorrect...

This agitator was an option for the wringer machines and from what I also gather, VERY rare to find. I have some old literature somewhere that lists all the options for the "E" series wringer. It "looks" the same as the automatic, but there is one specofically for the wringers...

Go Chris!

It's nice to see I am not the only one that caves to the pressure of vintage appliances on Craigslist!

Chris

I had to replace the motor on my Maytag E and got one for $25 plus shipping from Phil in NY. He has almost any part available and reasonably priced. I was happy to hear that the lint filter "agibitator" was cracked to begin with. Those old Bakelite ones grew very brittle with age and it is sometimes impossible to replace the spline in them without them breaking. To bad it was broken. I can post Phil's info here if you wish. Just let me know.

well at this point I have a feeling the machine really is trash for what it would cost to buy even used parts I can just buy another one. what I want to do I is find another one and then take this one totally apart to learn.. then once I know for sure its trash out comes the saws all.. I guess is should have taken a pic of the agi but trust me it was split all the way down even if I could have used a puller or some sort of inflate a bag under it it would have split in half anyway so fret not my pets it was already toast.. I never just destroy anything good just for kicks..

It's THE MASTER

That was the TOL Maytag wringer model. The Chieftian was the cheaper round model. There's a motor on Ebay right now but expensive. Like $89.00 but maybe you can bargain him down.

The trans, or power unit as these are called are not that complicated. I'm pretty sure yours is seized up.You have to remove the tub to get to it. I was kind of overwhelmed when I figured out I'd have to take mine apart but noting NEAR as complicated as some of these threads I've seen about rebuilding an automatic transmission.

I have one I use as a daily drive I bought for $25.00 of CL a year and 1/2 ago. It was in as rough shape as yours and I really had no idea of what I was getting into. Yes, I spent quite a few bucks getting it running. But if you decide to go for it I'd be happy to help you run through the process. Now, one HUGE problem with mine was water or whatever was left in the tub and the bottom corroded through. Finding a new tub was a process and expensive. I'd give it a water test to check out the tub first, if you haven't already. You can also evaluate by giving it a good look from the under side. Let us know what you decide! That machine was produced from late 1959 to end of 1965.
