59 GE Stove

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

more than a "bit much".... I saw that same model stove at a recent estate sale for $100.00. Where do these people come up with these prices?

That's much earlier than '59, in 57 GE went to the squared cabinet design like Frigidaire and others. (This is my 57 Liberator) I'll bet this ebay range is from 52-53 or so.

$1000 is insane, they claim that antique stove restorers sell these for thousands more - thank heaven for the internets and the google.

Well what do ya expect from someone in west texas where all the tumbleweeds have obcviously knocked out many of his brain cells in combination to all the sand storms chisseling out more brain cells.

By the way....

I HATE it when eBay sellers try to compare "basement" merchandise with professionally restored items. There is no comparison between a musty, mildewed stove that has been in storage (I'm putting that politely) for three or four decades, and one that has been gone over. A restored range (from a good restorer) gets rewired, its timer rebuilt, its insulation replaced, gas valves gone over and rebuilt or replaced, and sometimes some reporcelainising. One that has been put into a basement or garage usually ended up there for a reason- there is no possible comparison other than the fact that the two might be the same brand and model.

We've all run across "time warp" merchandise in basements and garage sales, and I'm not talking about that. Those deals are GREAT when they happen. But don't tell me I should pay the same for your pig in a poke on eBay as I should for something that looks and works like new. I'll pay you fairly for what you're really offering, but if that's not enough for you, good luck with finding someone ignorant enough to believe that paying as much as you would for a restored unit PLUS the cost of a restoration is a good deal.

Same with thrift stores...

The thrift stores, at least here in Seattle, are trying to charge "ebay" prices for stuff that only occassionally sells for a lot on eBay.

For instance, there is this campy suitcase massage unit from the 50's that is at the local St. Vinnies. They originally priced it at ONE HUNDRED BUCKS then lowered it to fifty, which is still about forty more than I'm willing to pay. And so it sits there. It has sat there for about six months.

What's really frustrating is that the St. Vinnie's used to have the most brilliant pricing scheme. Each day, depending on the color of the price tag, you could get stuff for up to 90% off. That encouraged people to either buy the "must have" item for a healthy price, or to keep coming back until is was discounted (which bought more people into the store more often) But that was, of course, abandoned.

That's it!!!!!!!

My parents have the white version of the GE Liberator pictured above. They got it in '58, the year they were married. I loved how the colors lit behind the selection buttons for the burners. They still have it and its hooked up in the basement and used occasionally for holiday cooking and some canning.

Still works like a champ although some of the color panels beind the controls fell inside. I'm going to have to take it apart to retrieve them. My parents don't care about the colors, but I do.

My Parents.......

Unfortunately, I can't get them to part with it. They save everything. I did talk them into giving up their Zenith Console stereo. That's coming here as soon as I can get a place ready for it. I'll keep you in mind if they want to get rid of that GE stove. My wife hates electric stoves and I'm sure it would not work out well with her here. I am looking for a Tappan gas range from the late 40's or early 50's. Not sure of the model number. My wife left the one she had when she moved and regrets it now. Since I never paid attention much to it, I never found the model. I did find a pic of it on the net, saved it for reference, here it is. Any help with identification would be appreciated.

Joe:

I was joking (I want folks like your parents to live a long, long time, surrounded by their favourite things), but I will hopefully be moving next year, to a house where I can have all the vintage appliances I want. Right now, I'm in a house that has built-ins, so no vintage Liberator. Waaaaahh!

I'm looking forward to the day I'm outta here- this place is three stories, and baby-boomer knees don't go too well with that...

Joe - that Tappan stove is very similar to one my grandparents bought in the very early 60's, theirs was 30" rather than 40" and the back panel was a little different - but the chrome burner trays, grates, knobs, oven door shape and trim were all the same as pictured. Good luck finding another - they were very nice ranges!

Danemodsandy,

No problem, I often joke about all the stuff my parents save. That GE won't get away.

Gansky1, Thanks for the info on the Tappan. I'm sure one will show up around here.

Ge made the ebay stove from 1948 - 1952

There have been a two that have showed up on craigslist around here and about 5 or so on ebay that I have noticed. Prices do vary and most don't sell. I bought mine on ebay about 7 years ago for $50. The fellow said it was in the maid's quarters of a mansion, and rarely used. He was right it was in brand-new condition. The only vintage ad that I have seen that exactly matched my stove was 1948.
