'62 Frigidaire Dryer Timer Motor SPEED

Well this is interesting. Started working on my '62 dryer to put her back into service. I'm doing a little rearranging and figured I'd hook it up. What I found interesting was that the timer motor was running as could be seen in the little inspection window on the motor cover..yet the timer wasn't advancing. Further inspection revealed non-factory terminal crimps suggesting this motor had been replaced in the past. Then the red flag: 1/30 RPM. Might take me a LONG TIME to get a load dry ; )

Anyone have an idea on what the correct RPM should be for this motor?

it depends on the gearing between the motor drive and the timer cam. That could be the correct motor. The last two timers I worked on were washer timers and the dials had been reversed by someone in the past which broke a one way cam between the timer motor and the timer dial. The motor and escapement would skitch forward but the timer dial and cam just sat there.

Dryers have no escapement, the motor usually drives the cams directly. What makes you think its not the original timer motor? Is there a date stamp somewhere?

If it goes around once in 30 minutes it might turn the timer dial 1/4 turn which could read 30 minutes so it would take 2 hours to have the dial complete one revolution and most vintage timed dry timers could run up to two hours.

That it is not turning the dial tells me there is some cog that is no longer working between the timer motor and cam, and if someone turned the dial backwards in the past they probably broke it.

That said I haven't worked on a Maytag dryer in 30 years.

Jon, it was the electrical tape and automotive crimp terminal that gave away the replacement. BUT, you could be very well right on the RPM. After pulling the motor tonight and running on the bench, it appears the gear reduction on the MOTOR SIDE is kaput. No rotation. But the big Q remains... X RPM?

I'd try hooking up a normal 1/3 rpm washer timer to the dryer dial run it and see how fast it turns thats a start. How long is the longest time on the dryer timer dial? If it completes 2 hours in 40 minutes then you need a slower timer motor.

Cory, I don't know if it could help you but for all 1962 Frigidaire dryers (except the BOL DDA-62), the timer motor part number is 5874798.

This won't solve your problem but I'm curious to see a picture of your timer dial. During the 1962 production, there was a change in the timer sequence of most Frigidiaire dryers. This is visible on the dial.

Other changes during the 1962 production were the addition of a Deluxe model with a fluorescent lamp panel (DDL-62 and DDGL-62) and liquid propane models (DDG-62LP and DIAG-62LP).

My 641c Maytag dryer timer is 1/30 or 1/36 rpm if that helps.
