Therapy...................

This is the washer that gave such a trauma to my life! I still need therapy! Same slide controls and letters. It had a gold/yellow agitator. I think it was a spiral ramp agitator. Is that right ? That is the Washer that my family bought when we moved from my childhood home. I was in the 5th grade. I was all excited about the NEW washing machine. I watched it. I FREAKED OUT! A neutral drain ! I was flabbergasted! Washing would never be the same again ! And still isnt. I have a kenmore, we became a Sears appliance family in the 70's and I continued the tradition. <p> Are there any top loaders out there now that do NOT do a neutral drain? When we got that washer, I just assumed that all washing machines were that way now. I figured it was somehow cheaper or safer to do the neutral drain. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the pain!

Maytag/Amana top load washers still spin/drain because they reverse the motor and have a non electric pump, either driven by a belt or directly keyed to the motor shaft. Frigidaire top loaders neutral drain for the past 10 yrs or so because they use a separate electric pump.70's and 80's Norge products (b4 Maytag bought them) neutral drained until the water level switch reset, then started to spin. GE products have also spin/drained as well.Whirlpool/Kenmore have always neutral drained,as far as I know, except when the first direct drive units came out in the early 80's. They quickly switched to a neutral drain design, as it is less load on the motor. Boring as it may be, it is a much better design, as you have no water flowing over the top, where water could leak and small articles of clothing can get carried to the outer tub. Seems I have gotten "carried away" Sorry! Hope that helps!

That's because opening the lid pauses the motor, having the same effect on the transmission/clutch/neutral drain mechanism as the pause that is programmed into the timer between drain and spin.

neutral draining

Being that I am a true "Kenmore boy", I always thought the neutral drain was the CORRECT way of ridding the water. When we switched from a belt drive Whirlpool to a orbital Maytag I was freaked that it spun and drained at the same time. I was thinking this thing ain't gonna last very long doing this. Surprisingly that 1990 Maytag is STILL in daily use and hot alot more miles ahead of it.

Give me a neutral draining Kenmore any day.
