A friend gave me a 80's GE side by side that was left when tenants moved out power was turned off and food left in it. not as bad as i suspected but whats the best way to get rid of mold its sitting outside right now in front of garage awaiting a new home i got it for a lil lady that has nothing

Ron:

Clean it out with soap and water, rinse. Then wipe down the entire interior - including every shelf, butter compartment door, everything - with a half cup of liquid chlorine bleach in a gallon of water. Rinse, repeat. This will kill the mold spores remaining.

Now leave the doors open for a couple of days to let the bleach smell dissipate. If it still lingers after that, a final wipedown with a solution of white vinegar and water should get rid of it.

It is very important not to turn the fridge on until you've gotten rid of the mold. If you turn it on, mold spores will enter the fridge's air-handling system. When that happens, it's an absolute bastard to correct.

Not mold related, but I would also take an air compressor if you have one and blow out the dust from the coils underneath. Or you can get a coil brush and use that and a vacuum. It's a good time to do that while it's sitting outside and it probably hasn't been done in a long time if you haven't already done so.

there were times I took a power washer to an interior of a funky fridge, a very thorough and detailed cleaning, inside and out....even a garden hose would work as well.....

then let set out in the sun for a day or two to dry out....doors open......compressed air to blow out hidden water will help....

if you have mold/mildew issues, especially on the door seal.....any bathroom cleaner with bleach, or designed for mold/mildew issues works wonders....
