Maytag roller problems

Hey out there in washer land here last weekend I bought a Maytag j2l wringer from an elderly lady my brother in law who does hard work for her and sold me one of her wringers.Anyways the problem is when you go tighten it the upper roller begins to spring up leaving a gap between the two but when you release it goes back to normal but doesn't wring out that well,So if anyone on here could tell me what causes it to leave a gap when you tighten it I would really appreciate it.

What do you mean "tighten" rollers?

Maytag's wringer washers have self adjusting rollers, you don't "tighten" anything.

Do you have owner's manual? If not you can download copy from library of this site. There you will find valuable operation and care information regarding your washer.

It sounds as if previous owner stored wringer with rollers locked apart (which is recommended), but you don't know how to release them and restore pressure.

Poor Wringing Wringer

Remove the top of the wringer head and see what is worn, the wringer roll bearing blocks are the first thing to look at, if excessively worn you may need some parts.

Ok I'll check that out but what I meant was to apply pressure when wringing out The clothes because I've seen on YouTube if you turn the bar clockwise it applies more pressure and counter clockwise less pressure,but when I try to apply more pressure that's when the upper roller springs up and leaves a gap like so In one of the pics I posted.

The bar at the top is only to lock the wringers back in place for like, hitting the red bar when the clothes get caught up in the rollers. There is no adjustment for tension on a Maytag wringer.

You're not reading information provided

Tension bar only applies or releases pressure, it does not cause any sort of increase or decrease. Maytag wringer washers have preset tension that self adjusts to what is being put through rollers. There is a way to increase tension but it involves taking wringer head apart and adding extra set of bearings.

Again it sounds as if previous owner did what she should have, locked wringer rollers apart without tension for long term storage. Have you reached out to her about how to reverse procedure? Did you read/try suggestions posted above?

I have read the suggestions so hopefully it will help me out but I was also wondering why the upper roller springs up when I try to apply pressure by turning it clockwise and locking the release bar but when I decrease the pressure the rollers go back in place So what could be causing the issue.

There is a safety system built into Maytag wringer washers

As with many others that causes upper roller to jump up when a large object (hand, arm, too thick blanket or whatever) attempts to go through rollers. Again this is a safety system designed to prevent injuries (of which there were many back in day), when something that shouldn't is caught in rollers.

When whatever object is removed from rollers, one has to reset wringer to apply tension and cause upper roller to drop into place. Until this is done properly upper roller will not engage as it should because safety system is still activated.

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions,but what I'm trying to get at is when I apply the tension by turning it clockwise to activate the safety release and that's when the upper roller springs up in the one of the pics I posted but when I deactivate the safety release and turn it back with less tension the upper roller goes back in place because when I wring out the clothes they are still wet and have to wring them several times to where I seen videos on YouTube when they apply the tension all they have to do is run them through the wringer only once to where I have too run them through several times to get all the water out.

I finally found out what was causing the upper roller to spring up when I turn the tension to activate the release bar here one of the tension rollers is missing.

Hi ... you're smart in reaching out to cottagecraftworks; great company to work with. I saved up this past summer and bought a refurbished wringer head complete for a Model E from them; AMAZING! I think better than factory new (if that was possible)! Wow ... does that baby wring! They have an Amish supplier back East; it shipped beautifully. Excellent tension; even with used rollers.

Not exactly sure what they did to improve wringing ability, haven't dissected it yet but have noticed a metal spacer on the lower roll near the drain shuttle brake cam (can't imagine that helps with wringing). I have used this quite a bit now; it's very powerful. It takes rugs and blue jeans with ease.

The after-market parts, like gaskets, are terrific, too. The stop ring looks like Maytag original; also ordered lid bumpers. Got the A5200 gasket set; looks like factory made, as well. Will order some hoses next. Good luck; I'm sure you'll get your wringer working again. Nice machine!
