!974 Maytag HA806 Timer Issue question

Hello everyone. New to the forum. I'm a pressure washer & waste oil furnace tech by trade. I have question.

My mom has a HA806 that comes to the spin cycle and just stops. If I manually advance dial into the spin cycle it takes off and finishes out. It runs fine on permanent press setting. This gremlin only appears on spin cycle in normal setting.

I'm thinking it is the timer assembly. Not just the timer mtr.
Maybe a cam sticking or a worn cog on assembly gear. Am I on the right path. Has anybody had any luck w/trying to fix the timer assembly rather than just replacing it?

The dilemma is the cheapest timer assembly I found was $123 before shipping and that is a 1/4 of the way to a new washer.
Not only that, she is thinking of moving soon and would rather not move a new washer, dryer, dishwasher and refrigerator but rather buy new when she moves.

On top of that, the color is harvest gold which they don't make anymore and her kitchen ajoins the laundry room and the dishwasher and refrigerator are also harvest gold and she wants every thing to match. So in her mind she would have to buy all new appliances to color coordinate. Not sure how women think??

Probably too much information, but this has quickly become my problem also.

Sounds like a timer problem to me. If you get the part # off the old timer, I might have a used one.

Mom lives about 45 miles from me. I live in Cedar Rapids Ia and she is in Monticello. I have the serial # of washer (760291WU) Series 01 not sure if that helps. I do know it is a 1974 HA806 but they may have made that model with several different timer variations possibly.

I may have to drive up there this weekend to look @ it and get part # off actual timer. I have not looked @ it yet but just got information that was relayed to me from a service call she had. They couldn't get the timer as it was too old of unit.

Do you know if you're used one works? How much would it cost?

I told her she might have to start doing laundry with an old wringer washer she has in the basement. . ha,ha. Actually the wringer is in very good shape. She wants me to haul it away.

Does anybody on this board ever do anything with those?

If I have one, it's from a washer that I scrapped years ago, probably for leaking, or noisy bearings. It would be yours for shipping.

Thanks for your help in this matter. I'd rather replace a timer than remove my mother's complete appliance inventory due to color coordination.

If the machine doesn't have a suds saving option (which it most likely doesn't) the part # for the timer is 204499.

Don't toss that 806 or wringer out!!! Those are hot items here, especially that 806 washer as it's a TOL (top of the line) machine! If your mother plans on moving and doesn't take either washer with her, it's best that those items go to a club member here where they'll both be appreciated.

You got it qsd-dan. when I get up there for the repair on the 806 I'll check on the wringer model #, etc.

And for the 806 when she moves I'll certainly list it here for little or nothing. It looks brand new as that is how she keeps things. there is an maytag dryer that matches it perfectly and it too is in excellent shape. In fact they look practcally brand new. No rust whatsoever.

I like this forum and will stop by frequently as I think I'm catching the bug. In fact, I'm a little jealous of my mom's washer. I have whirlpool topload only 2 yrs old and I don't like several things about it.

Anyway whatever I see around here in the way of appliances will get posted on here.

Wow, those sound minty! If the dryer has the same lighted console as the washer, it's probably an HDE806 (if the lint filter is in the back of the drum) or an HDE808 (if the lint filter is up font in the door opening). Matching TOL sets are always a huge added plus.

I went through my archives this morning, and came up with this. Does your's look like this one? Permanent Press cycle, Regular cycle, with a pre wash?

Is that the one the timer is from?

Have a question about the light. I see from pictures that this uses a florescent tube type. Are these hard to find or a common light that were used in other things. I don't think hers works as when I asked her about the light on the front panel she replied. . . "what light"? My Mom and Dad bought this pair new in 74 and the light must have went out so long ago that she forgot she had one. Kinda funny.

Since I'll be in the control box anyway I, should replace the light as I think that it is one of the cooler features of the washer. Especially compared to today's mundane looking units.
The light is not a priority right now, just wondering if they are a common type that are easy to find.

I'll take pictures of the 2 washers (wringer & HA806) and the dryer (HDE806) when I'm up there and post.

And Goatfarmer, you get 1st dibs on washer & dryer if interested (when she moves) and the wringer now, as she wants to get rid of it.

Do you want me to use UPS or US mail and what other details do we need to hash out?

Very common. It's an 18" 15 watt florescent tube light. I prefer the GE "Sunshine" tubes as they throw a dazzling white, bright light. You may want to replace the FS2 starter for the light as well. It's very cheap, usually $1 or less. I get 'em for .50 cents most of the time. It'll save you a trip to the hardware store if replacing the bulb doesn't get the console lighted.

The dryer take a 24" 20 watt bulb. It uses the same FS2 starter.

Since the washer is an 01 series, you actually have a tub light as well. Looks very cool at night in a dark room.

Post some pics of the machines, if you can. Particularly ones with the machines all lit up!

What is the tub light bulb or tube?

Is it simple to replace the tub light or do I have to take off a bunch of panels?
