Electric knives

I've never been too sure about these things, especially since experiencing one firsthand. Years ago we acquired a Sunbeam electric knife (with avocado handle) and re-enacted The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with an unfortunate ham as the victim. Ham sawdust was flying three feet in the air. Maybe something was wrong with this particular knife, but it was definitely not a good performer.

Veg forget how talk!

I didn't make myself clear: I proved myself wrong with the Hot Shot AND the electric knife. Frankly, I don't know how I ever got along without one. My current fave is a vintage Lady Vanity model. Interestingly, it makes the same cool smell that our old GE hand mixer did!

Aside to david: the son of a friend has gout and his doctor told him to eat dried cherries and drink cherry juice. Just thought I'd pass it along.

veg (I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV)

when I baked bread in the bread machine-the electric knife worked so well slicing the bread -and just out of the machine!!would cut it cleanly without tearing or sticking like a regular knife-I have a BD one.At the time I bought it-Cooks Illustrated recommended it.

thanks veg I will try cherry juice

I do take med for it. Anything to get relief. I just overdid the weekend and didn't take my pill for a couple days-duh?LOL.

I bought a new Oster elec knife from Target a couple months ago. Its a good knife and has the cord wired into the handle. Our old sunbeam was a good one, but the cord kept slipping out. I think it dates back to 1971. I'm going to keep the old one just as a collection piece. Not only does the cord fall out, the blades do too. It was time for a new one.

Thanks for the advice

Maybe I can cocktail the 2 juices together. I drink different flavors of Ocean Spray often.

Greg-there seems to be some improvement in electric knives from how they used to be. They even come in a decent case now.

David

When you buy cranberry juice, check the label.. most Ocean Spray cranberry coctails are not 100% cranberry juice, only a small percentage with lots of water and sugars..I think Costco sells a brand that is 100% cranberry juice. That's why they call it Cocktail and not Juice, they can't legally if it's not 100%.

Northland is a blend of juices

and is "100% juice," but not 100% Cranberry juice.

100% Cranberry juice is totally undrinkable. (I've tried.) One needs water, at least. My urologist said that the plain Cranberry Juice Cocktail(!), not Cran-apple, Cran-grape, or Cran-tangerine (my favourite) is the way to go for preventing UTI's. In my experience (all I can say--) is that he's been right for me.

juices.

Speaking of juices.

I beleive I have become sensitve to high-fructose corn syrup.
(in juices, sodas and almost everything else..)

For our international friends this is an inexpensive sugar substitute. Changes taste too. I had 7-up in Europe made with sugar and here in the US where it is made with "HFCS" and they taste radically different. (I am assuming that the water was not the main cause.)

Does anyone else geet high then tired from this?
my blood-sugar level appears to be normal, and diabetes seems to be a non-issue at this time...

What is going on?

Well Mr. toggle

It may be the caffeine. Did you know that in Canada and possibly Europe or certain countries there, that only "cola's" i.e. soda pop colored brown (Coke,Pepsi, root beer etc) can contain caffeine. 7-up, Mountain Dew etc since they aren't "brown" cannot contain caffeine like they do in the USA. Strange but true.

interesting

I believe here to be called a "cola" there must be caffeine in it.

I did not know that the product had to be brown to have caffeine elsewhere..is that by law or tradition?

yet, I cant think of a clear soda with caffeine...

I thought in scandinavia coke and pepsi (not sure if called "Cola") are only available without artififical coloring and are, therefore, clear.

Well, it's brown in Sweden and Norway. Perhaps they use a natural coloring overthere. I posted a link to the Norwegian website. Say after me: Er du tørst?

Tiredness

I'm on the Atkins Diet, and yes, that is exactly what happens. The sugar from soda or other quickly assimilated sweets causes the body to pour out Insulin to counter the rise in blood sugar. But them, one's blood sugar drops TOO low and you feel tired and sleepy. I used to feel drowsy after lunch all the time until I quit having large sugared sodas at lunchtimes and realized Atkin's was right.
