A couple of questions from a newbie :)

Hi all! Found this site, after looking for information on my Maytag A606. Seems like the lid switch needs to be fixed. Is this an easy to do it yourself project for a woman???
I love this old washer, and the owner who gave it to me a couple of years ago is still surprised it is still working!
Also, what kind of paint do you guys use when restoring?

Welcome Maytagmom, will it not power up? I am sure someone will advise you. That said, don't be surprised if you get 300 replies on how to permanently disable it. (seriosly if you have small children have it repaired). We hate lid switches. As far as paint depends on the quality you want. I have noticed several posts where folks have enlisted the expertise of automobile paint professionals. Some spray paint, and from what they say if the surface is acrylic or porcelain, will make a difference in the prep. process. You have certainly brought your questions to the right place.

Well at first it wouldn't turn on after I pulled the knob out...then I figured, "hey...I have been having to jerry rig this switch with a peice of plastic, so I added the end of a flat head screwdriver, errr...jammed in there to keep the load on". ( I know...*gasp*, but I had to do what I had to do...LOL) Worked like a charm, and got 3 loads washed. I just really hate to give someone my hard earned money to come out and look at it, and then charge me a fortune. :-(
Told myself, I would buy another Maytag, cuz this thing is still running like a top (knock wood). But really would like to keep this running....its a heavy sucka, and I dont feel like moving it, anytime soon. LOL
BTW, its procelain on the outside. Expensive to restore? Has no dents, etc. Just needs new paint.
Waiting for all the responses, I have no life, LOL!

I am no expert but.

If you can get it to run, pushing in the little lid switch, it sounds to me like the little bump on the rear of the lid is not pushing in the little button. With the lid down try pushing the lid toward the little button. You may only need those little round marble looking lid hinges, if they are not "holding the lid" in place correctly, so that the bump hits the safety switch. Just an idea till someone that is truly good at this posts. Hope you get your laundry done before the Bunny comes. Happy Easter to you, as well.

If the lid hinges are not sloppy, then you need to adjust the position of the switch.

Unplug the machine, remove the back of the control panel. You will see the little microswitch in the middle below the timer. If you loosen the 2 screws that hold the switch with a 1/4" nut driver, you can slide it around untill you get a proper "click" when opening and closing the lid, then snug the screws back down.

Remember to unplug the machine!!

It is not a good idea to disable the switch since it also acts as the 'off balance shut-off'.

I was working on a Maytag A406,that a mouse had gotten into,built a nest,and chewed some of the wires in the console.

Forgot to unplug it,and found out the hard way that the mouse had chewed through the insulation on the wire on the power cord that goes to the lid switch.Wife was standing there,and wondered why I started dancing.....

ON the painting Maytagmom: If it is porcelain then a good scrubbing with BarKeepers Friend will bring it right back to new shiny porcelain. I would try that first before painting over porcelain.
