A couple of vintage Maytag finds on Craigslist

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Here's a vintage gas dryer. Looks like a 700 series or earlier machine for $30.00 in the Oklahoma City area. Though the photo isn't very clear it still looks like it's in descent shape. At this price, someone needs to rescue this one. Maybe someone here can clear up just what model this is as well. All of the gas 700 series machines I've seen have a little inspection panel for the pilot light in the lower front panel, which is missing here. So it's likely and older model(or not gas). Any ideas?

Good luck with the washer Christina

If it's still available, are you planning to go all the way to Mo for it, or have it shipped? Regardless, that's dedication.

Regarding the Maytag dryer, the seller claims he's selling it because he no longer has gas available, and yet if it's an electric dryer.....well,... I'm just saying. Is it common for people to be so clueless about what they're selling?

Clist posters fail to to mention gas/electric often, That  801 or whatever it is, is very nice.   alr

All the way to MO!

Yep, I was prepared to leave this morning if necessary. About a month ago I drove to NH to pick up a HDG408 in great contion $25. (I have matching Harvest 806 washer & dryer but the dryer is electric.)

I left a phone message yesterday morning but no phone back. So later in the evening I sent an e-mail repeating my message and again leaving my number. sigh. I'm the oldest of 7 and my mom (78) has sacrificed a lot. It would be fantastic to find this machine still available and be able to give it to her. I see my parents every Wednesday and last week she asked me "was I still looking?" I said "yes, Mom, every day a couple of times a day. 806's are hard to come by, especially when you insist it be white!"

Curiously, one of the CL searches I regularly do is Vintage Maytag Washer and that ad never came up even when knew it was there. So I'm grateful to you for posting it, John, and keeping my fingers crossed!

806 SOLD!! But not to me!!

And here's a first - the guy thought I was kidding! He thought it was a joke cuz "nobody would drive that far for a washing machine"......

End of March I found an A806 in PA for $40. Was set to drive and arrive on the day the guy requested but he called at the last minute to say he sold it. Why?! Somebody at work had their house burn down so he sold it to him......

Sooooooooo I'll keep on lookin........

Trek for a Washer

That is a long drive for an 806. These machines are not super rare like say a 50's 142 or AMP or something super vintage. I would not drive to New York for an 806. If you peruse your comfort radius on C/L you will find something, but you must be patient. Also, spread out and hit up some furniture/appliance shops and flea malls, I'd had success there as well. Since you're willing to drive all that distance, shelling out even $200 for the machine is still a bargain.

I've made huge cross-country treks >12 hrs each way before, but now I make damn sure it's something that really warrants it. If I drove that far for all of my Maytags, geez I'd be so burn out by now I'd never do it again.

Good Luck,

-Tim

Patience

You're right, Tim. Patience is a virtue and I do check various appliance stores and such. I'm much more circumspect when searching for my own stuff but I'm willing to make the extra effort where my parents are concerned. Plus, I actually enjoy getting out on the road. But your points are well taken and I appreciate your advice and support. Most kind!

Travelling

Honestly, I do too, it's all part of the "thrill" if you will. Every now and then it's nice to just hit the road and go. The prize that comes back then has more meaning, I like that.

I just don't understand sellers sometimes. What's so odd about traveling a bit to pick up a vintage washer? It's not like you can just drive down to the corner appliance store and pick up the long out of production model you've been looking for. Vintage machines turn up where they turn up, and buyers have no control over it. I recall reading a comment from someone here on this blog were a guy flat out refused to sell him the washer he had listed on Craigslist, simply because he was in a different state. As long as the buyer meets your asking price, why should it matter where they're driving in from?

I think it's because they aren't sure if your serious.

I've listed stuff on CL, lots of times.  I've even given stuff away for FREE, something I do a lot.

If someone is calling from 2 hours away, I'm automatically suspicious.

Either they don't know where I am from them

OR they are a fraud.  Most of the time it the first one.

If one can pay via paypal, but then you want to make sure that the guy selling isn't a fraud.   SO.... yeah,

Next time, try offering the person $20 extra as an incentive to hold it just for you.  It's  a small price to pay for quarantee.

Be grateful that these people were nice enough to call you, at the last minute BEFORE you started driving.

Best of luck to you !  You'll find what your looking for, perhaps at the most inopportune time.  And it might not even cost you any money.  Be patient, and keep your eyes open for opportunities.

Trust me I WAS glad he told me before I left!! And I'm also aware how flaky people can sometimes be and how it might make sellers cynical or jaded. I thought I had made my intent clear but your suggestion of offering extra money is a good one - I'll remember that.

Let's face it, shopping through CL or the classifieds is not like shopping at your local store. There are no definitives, there will always be surprises - some good, some not - but that's the nature of the beast. And I suppose that's part of the joy in tracking down these beauties - the thrill - as Tim says. It certainly pays to be determined!
