Hey Rob

Im impressed but you REALLY need a new lower cable hook!

The Hoover Cleaner will clean carpets far better than the Electrolux machine. The short dirt path to the fan, and then to the bag, allows the Hoover to achieve better performance. The activator-agitator will groom the carpets whilst beating them thoroughly.

The Electrolux 500 uprights suffer from a particular design flaw: the motor spindle has a tendency to wear, causing the drive belt to ride inwards and cut into the plastic housing, creating a horrible smell of burning rubber. I was never keen on the Electrolux brushroll either - cheap 'n' nasty.

An engineer once said to me that Hoover once made the best uprights, and Electrolux made the best cylinders; in terms of reliability, servicing, spares, etc.

A work colleague had a Hoover Turbopower that she used, and when she had the carpets professionally cleaned, the guy apparently said that he had never cleaned such clean carpets!

Later she lived with a bloke who had an Electrolux 500-Series upright, and she hated it. They subsequently bought a Dyson DC01.

I personally would not use those carpet freshening powders. They clog the dust bags and filters, and the finer powder particles can be blasted straight though the bags and filters, back into the room. Those powders contain chemicals that can cause allergies to animals as well as humans. The chemicals may even be linked to carcinogenic compounds.

Finally, Electrolux used to say in their user manuals that the use of carpet freshening powders, if left within the cleaner too long, may cause the plastic structure of the cleaner to deteriorate.
