Congrats, Jason! I wish you much luck in your new position...

I've been unemployed a few times and it rocked me to my foundations more than I let on, because of the insecurity and the fact that every little unpredictable expense seemed like an insurmountable hurdle....I still buy toilet paper in twelve-packs , lol!

Seriously, it looks like your move was successful and this job just seems to be confirming it.

Wonderful place to work!

But now the problem is, I'm so damn busy and have so much work I won't have much time to work on the garage/collection.

I got my new Dell delivered last Tuesday. Took it out of the box, plugged in all the peripherals and ethernet connection, powered it up and it's been clear sailing. All I had to do was enter my username and the pop3 smtp addresses for email. I was dreading a bunch of setups and configuring but there wasn't any. So easy.

cool!

I didn't know Dell still made computers here in the 'states.
I figured they moved assembly overseas like everyone else.
The few recent Dells I've seen are made in asia.

Good luck on the job, hope it lasts!

Great!

Jason, that is wonderful.I know where that plant is-really easy to get to.Be careful crossing the street, cause people FLY down that road.

Jacon, you can be thankful for your job for the following reasons

Dell needed to have more points of assembly & testing placed throughout the country

Dell wanted to not have all of its total concentration in Texas

the rapid growth of Dell and the cities of Austin and Round Rock couldn't agree on terms in developing infrastructure fast enough to support the dynamic explsion in employment growth Dell was having. The environmentalists kept getting in the way and Dell got tired of dealing with them. So essentially Dell said, fine, we'll take our growth and employment opportunities elsewhere!! And that's just what they did. Austin is both a haven for its beautiy as a city as as being cursed with its own liberalism which can stifle business development and growth opportunities. It took over 20 yeaers for the city to come up with another major transportation artery, to relieve the dependence soley on I-35 to get from one end of town to the other (because when there's a wreck or construction, it virtually shuts down0 because of all the concern for wild life and animal life. Yes protection of the city source of water (underground springs) is one thing, but being concerned about evey species, including as one would say, save the spotted house fly from extinction.

Bob,

Austin sounds a bit like the SF Bay Area in terms of its problems.

For example, we have a top-notch rapid transit system, BART, that works well for where it's got stations. But it's been over 30 years and it still doesn't go to the biggest job market in the Bay Area - San Jose. It's a ridiculous situation that is based more on inter-county squabbling about who will pay for what, and it also made working my previous well-paying jobs in the San Jose area a commuting hell (over an hour to go 25 miles).

The Bay Bridge retrofit (remember part of the bridge collapsed in the '89 earthquake) should have already been completed. But the proposed skyway to link Yerba Buena island with the east shore was vetoed by Oakland, because it wasn't impressive enough. So instead they chose an unproven huge self-anchored single tower cable-stayed design, which has added billions to the cost and years to the final completion date. To be honest, I also wasn't happy with the skyway design, but to tell the truth, it was functional and would have worked just fine for the purpose, and would have saved a bundle of time and money. It was rejected during a time when the area economy was booming, due to the high tech and dot com phenomena. Now things have changed drastically, economically, and I bet there are a lot of people besides myself who are wishing they'd just gone ahead with the simpler, less costly design.

I am a liberal, far left on some things. But I think it's important to admit when mistakes have been made and important to do the right thing to fix them and move on.
