Here's a Maytag NX for sale; not sure where the location is, however.

Notice the two balloon rollers (won't wring really dry), no lid hanger, gray primer finish, reverse decal, red agitator start knob, etc. Also, I think it must be pre-1968, because there is no "S" for the safety pedal.

I wonder when they stopped making these; I'll have to see if I have that info.

Price is a bit high ... even for PRISTINE condition!

balloon rollers

Hi Geoff, these balloon rollers just look like 2 regular "top" rollers. Are the centers filled with air? Could Maytag have cheapened the design anymore to encourage husbands to "upgrade" for their wives?
 
Hi Eddy ... Yes; they are the same type of roller. The bottom had to be "splined" on the left side to fit into the drive; you probably couldn't find a replacement one. I would replace it with the hard one that is normally on the N anyway. No, they weren't filled with air. They are the same type as your upper roller on your Model N2LPS. The ones on this machine look like they are in good condition, however.

I don't think Maytag could have "cheapened" it any more either! One of the more irritating things for me was the lack of a lid hanger. I really use mine.

I also think it looks like a "canner", don't you? The original ones had the short post (or no post if you prefer) agitator. There was literally no post on it; the fins sat on the bottom of the tub. You filled it with water to the middle of the two tub bolts by the wringer post. I am not sure if the wash action was very good, because the post helps keep the clothes divided.

They also shorted the power cord by 2' ... it was only 6' long thus limited your ability to plug it in.

Do you think the red agitator control is a "fluke"? I wonder if Maytag purposely did that to make it look even more different.

The finish on these machines was the primer finish that is underneath the white machines.

Note that it doesn't have any locking casters on it. If you were to put a load of jeans in there and your floor wasn't level, it would be walking all over!!

All in all ... it's still a Maytag and I bet it runs great! It just looks different ... a person could get used to it though.
 
For $700, you'd think the seller would include a picture of the agitator. And include that modern GE in the background... He's dreaming! Appraised at over a grand? By whom? Obviously by someone who also has one to sell.

I've always thought this was an attractive model, even for a "value leader". No wheel locks - you're right about it rolling away while washing a heavy load, but I guess it can only get 6 feet before it goes dark. ;-) The red agitator knob is very odd, maybe using up old stock of them?

My sister-in-law got me my NX and a SpeedQueen for $1. Along with a wheelborrow and a ladder at an auction!

As long as you're running hand towels, socks, undies, that sort of thing, the turnover is great, however, once you throw in a bathtowel, without a centerpost, that sucker just "sucks" down on top of the agitator and that's all she wrote! Then all you have is lots of sloshing without turnover.

I'd love to see if a powerfin would fit in mine. (What can I say, I'm a lint filter kinda gurl!)

PS. You're right about not wringing very dry! That's why they get wrung out and the put in the duet for a final "wring" before going in the dryer!

I see the new photo of the interior; it's the short post.

Jeff ... that's interesting about large items being pulled down over the agitator; I can see that happening. Not very effective washing for larger pieces, huh?
 
i was wondering if.

Red knob, black agitator maybe a replacement in the 60's and the turquoise aqua on the wringer kinda 70's, Geoff did they ever have red knob for agitation and aqua push to release at the same time. seems kind of put together from at least 2 different machines to me. what do you think? alr2903.
 
Greg, the picture of the Gyrator is there. It's aluminum , postless and sort of confusing to perceive at the bottom of the tub. This was the cheap model that Maytag salesmen wanted to have to offer to someone who could not afford the other wringer washers Maytag offered. They sold new for a lower price, but they also brought less commission for the salesmen. Maytag made the machine and then gave the salesmen a very real economic disincentive to sell it.
 
HI everyone, I remember seeing one of these new about 1958. I wonder why Maytag did that? I agree, doesn't seem like the agitation would be the same as the gyrafom action. By the way, my new (old) Cheiftan is wonderful! I did a huge wash in it last week and the rugs turned out like new. Love these wringers. Gary

That is the low-post black plastic (I would assume; not bakelite) agitator.

alr2903 ... No, Maytag never combined the colors on their standard wringer washers. They switched from the red accents to the blue accents.

This machine, however, could have used up some old stock as Greg pointed out. By 1966, Maytag stopped making the red accents and black agitator and switched to the all turquoise accents. This machine could have been made up of the extra old stock.

If I had this machine, I would swap that red agitator control for a blue one; I think it would make it look a little better. The black low-post agitator works with the color of the tub, but I bet a regular turquoise blue agitator would look and operate better.

Tom pointed out about how this was designed as a sales tool for upgrading to a regular model. If you put this side by side to a regular Model N, you could see the differences. The Model N would certainly look like it was a better buy. These (Model NX) were sold for $99 for a long time and the Model N2L (no pump ... $10 more) was sold for $129.95. So, for $30 more, you could have all the "bells and whistles" of the N2L!

I am trying to find sales data for Maytag's wringer from the mid-1960's to end of production in 1983. From talking to our local dealer, they sold both the N and the E for around the same price ($500) at the end of production. That was a lot of money then for a wringer washer.

So, Maytag had the "Performa" line a lot earlier than we thought....cheaper, not made as well....and so on.... but still the masses could have a "Maytag"....(LOL)
