Now the Bad

According to the previous owner they were in the house when he moved in two weeks ago The house was owned by an elderly couple According to Him the washer simply keeps filling..I havent hooked it up to the water yet to see what it does ..It does however spin Which is a good sign..The Dryer Runs nice and quiet Heres another pic of it laying on its side ! The valve for the "suds saver" looks a little stiff and scarey lol

Hey don't knock a suds-saver 'til you've used one. I love them because I feel more involved in the whole laundry process, reminds of using a wringer washer in a weird sort of way.

Just a Final Word

Guys! If you Really want this stuff Dont play games...Go Get it! Ive met several great people on line some who say they simply wont mess with listing anything anymore because of all the BS they go through . In this case I shouldnt complain because it worked out for me in the end..

Polkanut!

Im not "Knocking" The suds saver option..Just the actual PART! its old crusty and the rubber part is hard! SHEESH!

Keep a eye out...

Looking at the picture of the bottom, I'd make sure it doesn't have a small leak @ the outer tub center seal and/or one of the tub bolt seals. Sometimes just the act of moving an older whirlpool will disturb those seals. Not a terribly bad job to do, tho...

1966 vintage

Thanks for the info RedCarpetDrew..Hopefully... That wont be a problem ! But as allways anything this old could have several problems..including the dreaded spin tube thing I allways hear about. But they sure are pretty to look at if nuthing else! Lots of chrome and lights

Hey Tim, those look BE YouTeFul! Glad you got them.....Thats a great set from approx 1966. The date should be stamped on the tranny. That dispenser is actually a dual dispenser, both bleach AND fabric softener......When you pop the lid you will notice a two chamber/two solenoid unit on the left. The lid hinge should not be too hard to find. Its bascially the same one used on both Whirlpool and Kenmore for many many years.........
Im sure you will love that set once its hooked up and running......
And NOTE: Tim LOVES sudsavers! He has a fabulous 1960 GE FilterFlo washer with a SudsSaver he uses all the time.......
Just pointing out a worn part is NOT knocking the whole system........Right Tim????!!!!!

Tim Loves Suds!

I save so many suds....Tide's stock is falling...but Mr Bubble is going up! go figure!

Hummm How about Soaky? Does that Kenmore have a Soaky Cycle? Ha! BTW I think thats a three speed model Tim. Doe it have an "extra SLO" on the options knob?

Jimmy...Hmmmm

You had me thinking..so I went down to take a look and No..Extra slo...But you did however Jog my memory on the Bleach/Fabric softner dispenser I remember the one on my mothes had two long flumes...that stuck out Hers came out a lot as well..May be a challenge to find one of those

That is a beautiful pair. Congrats on getting them home, and I hope that all issues that exist with the washer are remedied, so you can put them to full use. My next door neighbors had that exact set, except the washer was not a suds saver. I do not know for sure whether their dryer was gas or electric, but I remember hearing a rumble akin to those I would normally hear on gas dryers by other brands. It lasted for the first five seconds after it was turned on, which was sufficient time to ignite the pilot.

As I also remember, their dryer had the spindle knob that matched the washer's, as opposed to the dryer above which has the tactile flat knob.

Good Luck,
James

Hey Tim, I just remembered I have the original owners manual and instructions for both the washer and dryer........Remind me and next time you are visiting I will make you a copy of them!

About your washer's issues

Tim -

I saw those machines on Craigslist in Detroit, I am so glad someone got them who'll appreciate them!

You mentioned the missing or bad parts...I believe that the lid hinge parts are still available from WP or Sears. I recently bought some lid hinge pads from a Whirlpool parts dealer, and the hinges were used until very recently on DD machines.

I have a couple spare bleach dispenser bezels. I believe this machine uses the kind with the flow tubes that funnel the bleach to a reservoir in the corner of the cabinet. For whatever reason, the plastic they used for those is very brittle and I've never seen a bezel come off with the snap tabs intact. They're just sitting in my parts cabinet though, so if one of those would make you happy, just tell me if you need a bleach only, or a split bleach and fabric softener and it's yours.

I recently found three of those detergent cups. I needed one, but the other two are decent, though perhaps a tad yellowed. I'll check them for cracks - you're welcome to one of them as well if they're any better than yours.

One last thought....if you're looking for obsolete or NLA parts, check Sears Parts Direct. I have always bought from my Whirlpool/FSP dealer because I buy them at near wholesale. Recently I needed three items that came up "no longer available" from Whirlpool. I had checked the parts first at Sears and was surprised of the status. I went back to Sears, and they still had all three parts. In one case I get it at less then the last wholesale price because Sears had had the stock on-hand for a while and never updated or raised the cost. Something tells me they had new bleach bezels just a few weeks ago. I'm certain they have the non-solenoid type (that doesn't use the flow tubes) in white and a couple colors. If nothing else, you may be able to make one of those work.

Let me know if I can help you with the above parts! Congrats on the machines.

"Filter-Flo"

Actually, this could be a 1968 set as well. I do have a picture of THIS exact set in both of my 1968 Sears Catalogs (I have both, the S/S and the F/W issues of that exact year). I also have the 1966 and 1967 Sears Catalogs, and I don't recall seeing this set listed or pictured in neither of those catalogs.

AND

"Timonator":

This is in fact a 3-Speed machine. It was the #2 Kenmore for 1968 (the model below the Lady Kenmore) and it was one of two "Alphabet" machines (the other one being the #3 Kenmore with the side slide conceal cover...... the model that's below THIS one).

Being that I am not technically minded, I don't know what to do in reference to the "Sud-Saver" issue, but if you look around in these circles (and I am talking about amongst the other club members here), you should be able to locate a Bleach and Fabric Softener Dispenser from somewhere here. Now, as for the Lid Hinges??? Up until about 2006, Kenmores have always had side lids that opened toward the left, so in saying that then, these Lid Hinges should still be available at Sears. Kenmores were side opening from 1957 until 2006 (and that would include most of the older Belt-Drive machines as well as all of the newer and recent Direct-Drives). I would check with Sears and see if they still have them (I believe that they still do).

Anyway, these are beatiful machines. I see the exteriors cleaned up very nicely, I cannot wait until you service the outer tub and the inner wash basket (I see some rust in the wash basket). I am anxious to see these beauties up and running very soon.

Tim congratulations!! They are truely beautiful. And although i know many Kenmo's, I still love to see panel close-ups of both the washer & dryer. Bob

Charles

You are probably right I dont know the exact year of the machine I suppose the model number can tell you that which the tag is on it I just need to clean my bifocals lol I know my parents bought a set like this after they moved into their house in 1965 could have been a couple of years later because I do remember going to the laundromat! A far as Speeds I just looked at the "smaller Dial" and I didnt see any thing there that referred to a super slo speed but it may be done through the timer Havent played with it much yet

OK I couldnt stand it!

I hooked it up and guess what? It runs perfectly! The previous owner claimed it would just keep filling with water but ..It worked fine maybe the trip to ohio jarred something loose LOL I havent done a load of clothes in it yet I need to find a Permenant spot for it! Thanks again guys for your Help and Info I allways enjoy your input

Tip of the Day!

DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT move a Belt Driven Kenmore Barefooted! You could smash the hell outta your Big Toe! Like I did...I wont post the gory pic lol

Yikes!! tim!! I hope your big toes isn't too bad!! Sorry!! Thank you for the pics. No, this is only a 2-speed machine. It just occurred to me friends of my parents had this exact set, but in copperone. (1965-1967) That has to be the most versatile kenmore washer Sears offered in its day. Thank you for the pictures Tim. Does the dryer say anything about SoftHeat or Wringkle Guard? Yeah, that "Made for Permanent Preess" was put on many of their dryers for several years.
