A&P is closing 25 stores in the Northeast, mostly Pathmarks in NJ and Philly and also a few Waldbaums out on Long Island, and they are also selling seven stores in Conn to Big Y. There will only be four A&P stores left in Connecticut, yet another state abandoned by this once mighty chain. When all is said and done, they will have under 400 stores left, A&P, Waldbaums, Pathmark, SuperFresh, and Food Emporuim, as well as a few Food Basics. I wonder how much longer this venerable chain will be around.

There is an A & P Fresh Market here in Denville. When I moved here 2 years ago I thought it was great but it has quickly gone downhill....bad!! Out of stock on sale items the day the sale starts, prices are stupid even with their "new lower price" campaign. I don't know where they dig up the store staff, the woman who works at customer service is a miserable bitch, can't believe she can keep her job. The cashiers are even worse. I can't imagine that if they don't do something soon to improve that they will be around much longer. I now only use it as a large convenience store and do my food shopping at ShopRite.

That's sad to hear. I remember my parents shopping at A&P in Chicago back in the 60's & 70's. They were nice stores at the time.
Looks like they may shrink into nothingness.

What caused their problems?

Gone, they are all gone

We dont' have an A&P, a Piggly-Wiggly, or an IGA anymore.
Only grocery stores left are Wal-Mart, Dillon's, Aldi and Checker's.

I miss IGA the most, they were a little more expensive, but you could always count on TOP quality and super clean stores.

It is sad to hear that. I thought that A&P had made a comeback after they almost went extinct in the 80's. There are none that I am aware of in MA anymore.

All the older chains with the more personal service are being gobbled up by Walmart. The people make choices, unfortunate ones at that. Same with Lowes coming into town. The Aubuchon didn't even put up a fight. One day they up and went. Litterally packing up and moving out in the twilight hours.

sigh.

Jim,
I agree with you, even with their "lower price project" their prices are still high. They just have sale prices instead of lower everyday prices. The problem is A&P never listens to their customers despite what they say. How can two A&P stores, seven miles apart, on the same road, in the same county in NY, have different prices???

A&P has been gone from the Detroit area for more than 25 years. Every once in a while I see a building that I know began its life as an A&P - a sort of colonial style with a coupala on the middle of the roof.

Remember the Ann Page and Jane Parker brands they sold?? That was the first store that I ever saw 8 O'Clock Coffee, and although I was just a little kid and too young to drink coffee, I remember wanting it!

A&P bought a local chain here after they closed their stores - it was called "Farmer Jack" and they finally went out of business and closed all their stores four or five years ago. Detroit had a number of local chains including Chatham, Great Scott!!, Wrigley and Farmer Jack. All of them gone.

I have to say, I really love Kroger. We have them everywhere here, and I love to shop those stores. The sales there can't be beat, although Wal Mart usually sells for less, the ease of getting in and out of a Kroger store quickly has great appeal to me. I hope I never see the day when they have to close their doors.

8 O'Clock Coffee

OMG - that is an amazing coincidence - I fondly remember hanging around the coffee aisle in the A&P store where my folks used to shop when I was a brat just to smell the coffee! To this day, 8 O'Clock is my all-out favourite coffee and I make pilgrimages into Ontario just to get it!
As an aside, A&P stores starting vanishing from the Quebec marketplace in the 70s; the last couple of stores toughed it out into the early 80s but then got gobbled up by Provigo (now owned by Loblaws).
Recently, the Quebec chain Metro bought out A&P in Ontario and are closing down the A&P stores but seem to be keeping the Food Basics banner stores.
Anne Parker brands... wow, does that take me back!

Yup, our two A&P's went last year and are now Metro. While they gussied them up a little and brought in a little more variety they sure didn't do anything about their old high prices. They're as high as ever. I only went occasionally because they were the only two 24hr stores in town, now the one closest to me is only open to 11 or midnight.
They were the first large grocery in this town waaaay back,,used to get pulled their on my wagon by mom.

A&P used to own 8'Oclock and sold it exclusively but they sold it years ago apparently to get the money.
Metro still sells it here and I have seen it in other stores.. I like the Bokar a little better, darker and stronger

Speaking of 8'Oclock coffee get ready for an ugly make over, they are changing their package logo and design it looks terrible I noticed it at Safeway the other day.

Forget tried & true just like when RCA told Nipper to hit the road.

A&P hasn't been in the Cincinnati area for many, many years. In fact I don't remember there being many around even when I was a small child. My Dad worked for A&P for a short time in the Norwood store when it first opened in 1938, until he left for the Army. Really not sure when they closed their stores here.

They were going downhill long before Walmart & Costco. More like they never kept up with the competition and there's lots of competition. There stores were always too dated and messy looking, the ones I was in anyways.
