I've noticed on the mid to late 1980's Maytag washers (with orbital-drive transmissions) when you tip the tub far enough at an angle-the metal tub ring rail guard will strike the washer top metal flange-metal-to-metal! Now I've seen many other washers do this, plastic-to-metal, but metal-to-metal you would think during a very unbalanced load, the washer part(s) would get bent. The older helical drive Maytags didn't have this issue, the only thing that struck their top flange was that black off-balance switch tripper thing-but a METAL tub ring rail striking the metal top washer flange? Could someone please explain this phenomena to me?

The one I have is a mid 90's with orbital tranny. I have a plastic ring around the top of the tub.
It ever so rarely goes off balance, and if it does the off balance switch shuts it down immediately.

Maytag Spin

The two Maytags I had, which I wish I still had, had great smooth and quiet spins, much better than my confounded Whirlpool direct drive.
