I don't think I've seen that dial actually on a washing machine. All the 9901s and other washer dryers of that time seemed to have the dial of later Hotpoint washer dryers, I think these dials were harder to find.

The pic of the 9901 you posted in a previous thread had a different dial. If you look closely it actually belonged to the washer dryers made in 1991-1994, as the symbols had a tub with the temperature of the programme, not the tub with programme number like the older washer dryers.

I wonder how much the 9900 was new? I saw a vintage advert on the 9901 which was made in 1990 and the price was £479.

I hadnt noticed that detail about the machine on the left. Indeed it does have the later, more cluttered dial.

I owned a 9901 the year after graduating from university. A smart looking machine.

You can stop worrying its gone to a good home, been away for a few days over the weekend and was alerted by another member here at 30mins to go, I quickly txted my sister to log on and bid!!!, will need TLC, trims cracked and front panel well rusted on bottom, door boot needs replacing and a good boil wash required, drum seems tight and smooth which is a plus along with the fascia which is in fine nic apart from nic on one side!!!

So boys, time to dig that clear control dial out!!!

I have been having major pangs of disappointment and guilt with reference to this machine all bloody week.

FANTASTIC news and cant wait to have a gander at it.

Spa of Neil should sort the rusty bits (John's liberator dryer will need to visit too). Or is the rust quite well hidden, at the base of the front panel? Our 9520 has suffered there too.
Will dig out some spare lidstrips (courtesy of Gary) and see if we have any suitable (different attachments of the different generations).
You will have to sort the door seal I am afraid - standard Hotpoint 99-series I would have thought. Doubt theres any differences and me and Rob will seek out that dial and give it a polish too!

Thanks for the welcome. I am so glad a collector got this truly rare and fabulous piece of kit. If you do film this machine, please do a drying cycle as I have NEVER seen a Hotpoint of this type in one, even though I was around a similar one.

I'm not really a collector, I live with my parents no space really, they have a built in Whilpool, dreary and boring I'm afraid. As the name suggests I am a fan of Hotpoint Ultima's you just can't beat a good Ultima. They were so good and advanced at the time. I think 1986, was not just the birth of this machine, but the birth of the great Ultima Microprofile. Pricey, yet loads of people had them. The massive display, the super-fast (at its time) 1400 spin, if it had spin balancing and a countdown time, Hotpoint could sell exactly the same machine for the same price, I know I would pay top dollar (I mean pound ;-) ) for it!

I saw this fabulous Hotpoint WD41 at the same time as the 9900 on eBay. The price of £12.50 it sold for is amazing, considering the machine sold for £600-700 new (Real price, from Competition Commission).

I guess when I move out I'll try and get one. As much as I love these sort of Ultima's I don't really like the WMD/WF860 stuff, Merloni killed them I think. When they were true Microprofiles, they were great!!!

I used to have this machine....and hello!

Hi guys,

I’ve been reading the site for the past few months, but thought it was time I joined up and said hello!

I was really surprised to see the 9900 come up on the site – this was the first automatic we had after mum’s Hoover 3301 twin tub gave up after about 20 years of service. I didn’t realise that it was as far back as 1986 (now I feel old!), but I do remember that it cost £399.99 – a fortune back then!!

This was the first ever washer /dryer that Hotpoint made and I do remember that it had a couple of product recalls. The engineer had to come and replace some parts as I think the dryer had caused fires. I would guess that was why the model never lasted long until the 9901 was released with (hopefully!) modifications. The dryer was always breaking down and we really did get out money’s worth out of the extended warranty.

Think I sold the machine to someone in 1993 for £20 – it still worked at the time, so I suppose it actually lasted quite well by today’s standards.

Good luck to the new owner with the refurbishment and the replacement with the original dial!

I guess something like £399 must be double that value today. We've got quite a few members with encounters with this machine!

I am surprised that Hotpoint were also part of the "Washer dryer fires" facade. I thought it was only the lower brands like (Yes this will cause people to disagree) Candy, Servis, Kelvinator probably even Ariston. But I guess this machine had teething problems as it was the first. I would be even more shocked if Zanussi had fires as they'd been making washer dryers for a while by this time (First one was WD2290 made in 1980).

I do remember when these washer dryers were on Watchdog in 1993 though, when they kept shredding clothes during the drying cycle. I guess we had the problem too, as when we did move we opted for a 95 something with 800rpm and two buttons, but in the same gorgeous almond colour as the 9924/34 we used before we had our own house. I loved that colour, but ironically, I don't like eating almonds!!!

I'm a fan of hotpoint washers from the 70s and 80s. My mom's first hotpoint was the new generation 95620 which I loved to watch as a child. I do remember things going wrong with it on a regular basis through the years! Hehe

I remember the washer-dryer problems too as they there were always horror stories of them catching fire, I don't think they are much good now!

Washer dryer fires and Hotpoint washer dryers on Watchdog

I pretty much like the Hotpoints from these times too, though I am mainly an Ultima fan!!!

I actually wasn't born during the dark period of washer dryer fires!!! I know what the problem was though.

Basically many manufacturers had just released their first ever washer dryers. However it didn't occur to them that the dryer may overheat and catch fire, so there was no safety equipment like thermostats although I was surprised that Hotpoint didn't think of it! I knew that Candy, Servis Kelvinator and Electra had recalls though, were there any else? I wonder if anyone has any press info, I'd like to see Hotpoints!

I know there was a recall on Hotpoints in 1987 though, concerning the Ultimas 9560, 9561 and 9551. But it wasn't a fire risk, it was a fault which meant the door could be opened while in use, an interlock fail. But I remember that the Ultimas had extra door security, as the door relase button had an additional lock, so people didn't actually have to worry.

Another Hotpoint washer dryer!!!

I've seen this one quite a few times and it's listed as faulty. The seller's quite persistent! They say the drawer front is included, and I presume that it's a 9901/9920
