A tea with John Lennon next to his KD-16

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Maybe that isn't tea.

One of the many things I always admired about KitchenAid dishwashers made between the Mid-Sixties to the late Seventies was their classic lines and ahead-of-the curve industrial design. It was no wonder that high-end kitchen designers and cabinet makers like St. Charles almost invariably featured Superbas in their brochures; they self-integrated into any given kitchen design concept without ridiculous silly trickery like "no control panel" that are used today and never fail to piss me off because, ergonomically they are so smarmy and just plain wrong. Also, back then most other dishwasher manufacturers offered custom panel kits that used extra moldings and flanges that tended to defeat the purpose of using a custom-cut matching panel for the machine fronts.

The KA control panels were visible, scaled nicely to continue most kitchen cabinet top drawer lines and, much like Maytag Center Dial control panels, they were no-nonsense, easy to read and use detracting from nothing.

Much like the picture of Mr. Lennon's kitchen (I'm betting it's from his Dakota apartment and, if so, I knew the man that sold that unit to the happy couple) there's a TV commercial for KFC chicken nuggets that features a KDS-16, integrated into a recent kitchen that looks perfectly contemporary for a machine that's almost 50 years old.

Thread Detour: Ah, yes; the lost weekend. His partner in those heavy-drinking/drugging hijinks was one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Harry Nilsson. Some of us remember his huge "Nilsson Schmilsson" album, with its hits "Without You" (actually a cover of a Badfinger song) and "Coconut."

Not sure what kind of dishwasher Nilsson had, but can someone place the brand of his refrigerator? The album was released in 1971, if that's any help.

Wonder what's in that pipe he's holding? LOL

Thanks for posting the great snap of Lennon.

What a strange coincidence!

I was listening to his Imagine album while I saw this post (still am as I write this!).

I've been listening to LP records that I hadn't touched for years tonight on the Marantz turntable that I got from Jon! I just got a pair of Advent speakers and I'm really enjoying them! Jon talked to me about getting a pair of those 4 days ago and I had already emailed the seller of the small ones! (hearing his Advents last week might have influenced me a bit too!).

I got the Advent1 pair for free and the regular Advents the same day. I had the 4 of them refoamed just a few hours after I got them and they sound great now!

BTW, there's a KDS-17 for sale on Kijiji:

It looks like it has some damage and missing woodgrain trim on it's control panel but I'm tempted to inquire about it! I missed a KDS 17A last summer and I'd like to have one of these too!
