A trip to Phoenix, some "new" Westys and the turd

~ Trip to Phoenix

 

Almost a month ago I headed off to Phoenix to visit Justin and pick up a couple things.  

 

It happened to be Justin's Birthday weekend so I treated him to a couple races at the indoor electric go kart track: K1 Speed.  After that we met up with Roger and Nate who had driven up from Tucson.   It's always nice to visit friends and this time was no exception.

 

~ The "new" Westys (part 1)

 

As you may remember a month or so ago Justin posted that he'd just acquired a couple of Bendii and a Westinghouse slant front from Ross in Tucson.   To make a long story short, I inquired about the Westy, Justin got Ross's blessing and I now have it!   It needs a little TLC, but 50 or 60 year old washing machine doesn't?   Also I do have the lower panel for it, I just didn't bother to put it on for this photo.

 

I thought this was like the one my grandmother used to have, but after showing photos to my uncle, he says it was more like the 1955 Deluxe model our webmaster Robert has.   Oh well, it's close.

...Well I now have the matching Spacemate dryer!   THANK YOU SO MUCH Justin!

It's VERY clean inside too!   

 

The whites had been spun out in a FL @ 1100 rpm before I put them in here.   After running for 20 minutes, the clothes were 5 or M A Y B E  10 degrees warmer than it when I put them in.   It's like trying to dry a load of clothes with a hair dryer.   I gave up and put the load in another dryer.

 

I found it REALLY INTERESTING that this little dryer is a blow through or positive pressure type dryer, like the old Norge's!   If you look in the 4 inch long exhaust outlet, all you see is the back side of the drum.

And now the "turd"

 

 

Prior to putting my clean laundry in this dryer, I wiped down the interior (it had a layer of Arizona dust) then plugged it in to see if it worked.   I turned the knob and Ta Da, it does work!   I had it running empty and it slowly started to warm up slightly, yay!   After 4 or 5 minutes this "turd" blew out of the dryer exhaust and landed on the ground!   Can you imagine standing over the dryer and seeing this blow out of the back of the dryer?   

 

I chuckled when realized it was a bunch of lint that had rolled between the drum and the rear bulkhead, then just "blew out" the exhaust.   LOL   If you go back up to the first photo of the dryer, you can see it on top of the dryer for perspective of it's size.

 

Anywho, that's my story about a trip to Phoenix, some "new" Westy's and a turd.

What a nice dryer to match your other washer congrates on the slant front Westy.

Looks like Paul's first Westinghouse machine.

I gather you have to paint the dryer to match that washer ...?

Kevin thank You for the photo's of the westy space mate dryer, I remember them well, childhood machines.  I found your vid of the "spacemate, Laundromat" by accident ,it has been  many decades since i watched one.  If you would ever want to stack your spacemate the washer top goes on the dryer but there is a mounting frame that goes between the washer and dryer about 2 inches high.  LOL, i knew there was jeans or something with rivets or a substantial zipper when i heard the spacemate video that "clink" on the glass window is an unmistakeable sound for me.  U do turn the dryer upside down to mount it on the washer, with the "adapter" i spoke of earlier.  No lint  filter  on the dryer, my  late  Mom used to put a mesh potatoe or onion sack over the outside vent to keep control of the lint in the back yard.  i also greatly enjoyed a video,  of a GE combo that i think was yours as well.  Good luck with all your finds.  I am really enjoying your collection.  It would be great if someone started a thread  of all the new video going up over on youtube. If  you miss the original post you never know it is there. Kevin i wish you all the best with your collection.  Arthur

Sorry to post twice,  but i did not want to risk messing up my above, long post.  Kevin if you rewire the westy spacemate dryer to use 220,  It will not seem like drying clothes with a hairdryer, LOL.  The concave design of  the window glass makes it get very HOT.  IIRC,  someone once posted Westinghouse made up for the slower spin of the laundromat with the very high heat of the dryer.  Well anyway thanks again.   Arthur

Hooray for matched pairs!

How awesome is it finding the matching dryer for the spacemate. Even better that it works. Man, look at the drop in wattage for 110v. operation. Less than half! The Westie washer you also acquired look good as well. Are you sure the 'turd' wasn't a Baby Ruth bar?

Yes true, but as it hardly puts ANY heat into the mix, so it will probably take 2 hours (or more?) to dry a load!

Nice saves Kevin! LOVE the slant-front model - looks like it may be a late 40s model! How's the door boot on it? It is possible to sub a more modern one (ie a Q4699...) if necessary.

I've seen dryer 'turds' like the one you encountered - LOL - I never thought of calling them that.

Congratulations and hope to see the Laundromat running soon.

Glad to hear that the spacemate dryer works. I actually never even bothered testing it, after I purchased it couple years back. I bought it and put it in storage. Cool that its the same color as your spacemate washer as well. Just need some cleaning, and it will look good as new. =)

It took W 15 years to get those turds to eject themselves. Before that, lint just glommed under the basket until it lifted it up off the drive roller.
