A visit to the "appliance Junkyard" in Phoenix (actually Glendale, AZ)

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hotpoint set:

What year was that washer? We used to have a 1964 model that had a console very similar to the that of the dryer, which must be an earlier model than the washer featured. I think that model washer has come up as a POD. Thanks in advance.

Have a good one,
James

Wow, I just got a "Hotpoint Flair" yesterday. Except the one pictured did not seem to have an internal temp probe/readout. I have also done a restore on the "Tappan Flair" which I found to be a gorgeous stove. Love the ad twintubdexter. matt

Gordon glad to hear you want to rescue that "essential Kenmore", they have a special place in my heart too. arthur

Let me describe the sound of one of the WCI GE washers I've seen. They sounded like this: "woh click click woh click click...".

I know that I am resurrecting a dead thread but I need to ask a question.

Revvinkevin and KenmoreGuy64 (Gordon) do you remember the name of the place that you visited is featured in this thread?

They might have the tub, basket and base that I need.

Aberdeen is no more. Just empty fields now. They were an older couple that accumulated old appliances along with other "stuff" and had them on their place I believe. Others here would know more details. Did they end up with all those appliances from being in the appliance business at one time?

Heres a vid Robert posted from a trip to Aberdeen.

Never mind about the appliance farm in Aberdeen. I think I found my answer. I believe it's gone. Besides it was just a resting place, not a business as you folks have pointed out. Too bad.

The Appliance "junkyard" in Glendale, AZ....

Is Appliance Express. They are a regular appliance sales & service business. They just happens to have a large yard adjacent to the business with A LOT of old appliances out there baking under the Arizona sun.

Zoom, Zoom!

I can't believe that this place is only 10 miles due south of my sister's house in Glendale. Will be out there for a very short stay but maybe I can get to spy the place in person when I am there.

Check the link and zoom in on the satellite view. It is the wedge shaped lot right in the middle of the screen! All those machines are lined up like cars at Disney World! Or Disney Land, west of the Mississippi River!

Nice trip down memory lane. When I lived in Phx I picked up a couple of machines from that place -- that was back in 2003-2006, and even then the pickings were beginning to slim. I did get my gorgeous '64 Kenmore set from there so was grateful to have stumbled on the place. And that relentless Arizona sun just baked the hell out of so many of those machines sitting out there. That Hotpoint that is shown in the old thread was there even when I was there and I was just as tempted to take it home until I looked "under the hood" and saw that most of the guts were already taken away.

flyingethan

flyingethan- Just a question, i hate to ask but if you do happen to go to the appliance express yard and run across any ge filter flos and any hotpoint rim flos could you snap a few pics of them and upload them on here after your trip. Dont go out of your way though, as i will probrably never get to go there over 2,000 miles one way. Just let me know what you think! Thank you -Doug

Like Kevin, I have been there several times. To be able to go through the yard, the owner has to give to "OK". If you go there and he isn't there, the employees won't let people into the yard.
Also remember that these machines are outside in the sun and have been for years. Here in Arizona it gets 110+ degrees in the summer time. That heat isn't good on the rubber and plastic parts of the machines.

I'd love to go through a yard of appliances, but truth be told, I'd feel bad with the excitment, knowing weather is continually doing a number on these vintage appliances. Did you say four hours flew by, perusing the yard? I bet it did!

Thanks for sharing your adventures there, Kevin and Gordon. It's too bad these appliances can't be more sheltered. Glad you guys could find some things of interest to bring home. Looking forward to seeing more of these in the future, here.

Wow.
