"Japanese men are served food first and eat it piping hot. Wmen eat after the men, and as a result eat cooler food."
Serving men first may be the plan, but does it happen that way?
Growing up, I remember reading some of the Trixie Belden mysteries. Some may not remember/know these--a 1940-1980 something series technically aimed at girls, although there were boys like me who'd read almost anything not nailed down. (Plus, the books were frankly a lot better than the "gender approved" Hardy Boys.)
I remember one book, Trixie and her brother are talking to a woman from a culture where men apparently do get served first. Trixie's brother makes some crack about that. (He and Trixie have a long running battle, so he's probably just doing it to irk his sister.) The woman they are talking to says yes, it's true for her heritage that men get served first. But--she adds--the women do the cooking. And they need to taste before they can say it's good enough for the men. Sometimes, she hints, lots and lots of tasting is necessary.
Does this actually happen? Who knows? But I wouldn't be surprised if some women in "men served first" cultures haven't figured this idea out.
