Its that time of year again so I decided to empty the compactor, I always put several layers of old newspaper in the bottom of the reusable bin and date it with a sharpie.

When I took the bin out and dumped it in the counties Super Can I noticed that I did not quite make one year.

It was last emptied on 11-11-19.

All non-recyclable house waste from the kitchen and living areas goes into the compactor, We do not use any disposable plastic bags, paper towels or paper plates etc, my goal has always been not to buy any thing that is used once and thrown away.

I don't use paper towels, napkins, tissues either----Save the trees!!!And LESS BULK waste. For compacting-let the trash truck compactor-or in my case the large dump stationary compactor do the compacting.Either of these is more powerful then a home compactor and can compact the waste more densely.More waste per cubic yard. For me-recycle items go into the dumpsters at the dump place I use-A dumpster for cans and bottles-another for cardboard, one for white goods-another for yard goods and the last for small appliances-Keep a close watch on that one-have salvaged a few vacuums for my collection-including a like new Royal metal upright! Now why would someone throw that out?Works perfectly-just needed a little cleaning up and a new bag and belt.Brushroll was OK.Well, getting almost a year out of a home compactor bin bag is pretty good-most have to empty those weekly!I have seen home compactors at yard sales-just not interested.

About once a month for us

We empty ours about once a month. Only recyclables go into ours. I used to try to stay away from single use anything until the pandemic hit. We are now using a lot of paper towels in the kitchen vs. dish clothes like we used to. When this thing is over we'll go back to fewer paper towels but I can't imagine getting a year out of one fill of the compactor. Where we live we can't recycle glass or wax coated things like milk cartons. There are some other things but I'm not sure what they are.

A year is really good. Since Joe empties ours he would be thrilled with that. LOL. That is not one of this favorite jobs.

My complex has dumpsters so we don't recycle. However we put all cardboard, coffee cans and anything that won't smell due to food staining in the compactor. We go about a month without changing the bag.
