Carol Burnett's new book, This Time Together.

It is made up of short chapters, and is mostly, but not totally, about the wonderful long-running variety show.

She goes into extensive, but not boring detail of how the show came to be, how she and her then husband, Joe Hamilton, executive producer, found their cast and crew.

That CBS Saturday night was maybe the best programming block of the 1970s, if not ever. All In The Family, M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, and The Bob Newhart Show. Perhaps, even, the pinnacle of broadcast television. They were smart, yet kind, comedy shows.

She also goes into her friendships with Julie Andrews, Lucille Ball, Beverly Sills, and Cary Grant.

YES, she does talk about the Bob Mackie costumes, especially the "Went With The Wind" dress. (As if you could ever forget it!)

I got it from the library, but I am going to buy it next month.

A Late Spring/Early Summer Must Read

Thanks for the tip, Lawrence! Miss Burnett was on the "Charlie Rose Show" last month (May) discussing the book. As she described it, the work sounds both fascinating and bittersweet, in dealing with what was going on behind the scenes in terms of both "The Carol Burnett Show" and her own life.

I may beat you to the bookstore in getting a copy.

Some channel was having an infomercial selling episodes of the old shows using the usual format of excerpts and interviews. C. Burnett explained that they did two shows on Friday night, one at 5 and one at 7. At the 5pm show Conway followed the script to the letter, but at the 7pm show, which was the one taped, he did things that brought all of them to uncontrollable laughter.
