Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Your homes heating and a/c is a balanced system. Equalized air flow runs throughout. When you close off vents, you can unbalance the system. At least that's what I have heard.

For homes that have a second floor, there is a electric diverter that will send more cool air upstairs when needed.

If you house heats/cools unevenly, a heating/air conditioning specialist can balance your airflow for a better result.

And as for roof mounted A/C I have seen those predominantly in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico as well as some desert sections of California.

Another question

What about when you close doors? Doesn't if have to work harder? I keep the treadmill room door closed because I don't want the cats in there because I have stuff that they can get into. You can feel air blowing under the crack of the door. I've always wondered if that could cause problems.

We have 2 central systems on 72, most of the year. Our old house is not really "tight". The small window unit in our bedroom is going in the window this weekend, for the cruel part of summer. I am really enjoying my craigslist stove downstairs, this summer, its a few extra steps and takes some planning, but it sure keeps the heat out of the house. alr2903

What about Zoned systems?

According to Cook's Heating and Air it is ok to shut off the upstairs when not needed as it was designed to be the end of the system, and the system will divert the air to the other ducts. Just need to be careful to not close off more than 60% of the ductwork at any one time.

To have adequate air flow you must also have enough return vents in the house, so that if you close doors you will still have a path so that air can pass back to the furnace. I have returns in every room except the bathrooms and kitchen and also in the hallway on each floor and this helps a lot with moving the air even when doors are closed.

This Fridays the day.. I'm getting my new Mitsubishi ductless a/c installed...and just in time because it's already humid today and it's supposed to be in the 90s on Saturday and I don't like that

The ductless units (known as splits) over in the uk as the condenser and evaporator sections are mounted outdoors and indoors.

They are very good and easy to install.

A/C

We leave ours on 71 - 72 degrees day and night. With three roommates living in the house, we all have different work schedules. I work from 8am - 4:30pm M-F, my other roommate works 11:00pm - 7:00am S-Th, and my partner usually works 8am - 5pm or 9am - 6pm (some variables) M, W, F, & Sun. Even though we have a programmable thermostat, with all of our work schedules I'm not going to even bother programming it. - Mike
