I was just wondering what temp you all set your ac to. We have ours at 75, which is a little warm for my liking, but my parents freeze if it is any cooler than that!!
78F all of the time, except at night. Usually the temps here drop down below that at night even if the mid-day temps hit triple digits, so the A/C gets turned off and the windows are opened throughout. Otherwise, if temps don't dip below 80F at night, the windows in the house remain closed and the A/C stays on at 78F.
is a small bedroom unit, with single digits on the dial, not temperatures. When I turn it on, I have it set at "arctic," or what's the point? When I lived in apartments with central air, I always kept it about 10F cooler than outdoors.
...this house has 2 central systems (have friends that have 3 & 4) and I keep them at 77 during the day, 76 for the bedroom system at night...I had a BF a few years ago that inisited on 72 at night...I kicked him out after I got the first electric bill...
The only AC system I have has a maximum setting of "All Windows Open!" Temperatures can vary wildly. Although, at least, the electric use is pretty low!
I work in 100+ temp all day and when I get home I want it KOOL! Sure the ele bill is higher but I AM KOOL and comfortable .. many cannot say that. so I AM BLESSED!
Usually, my AC is kept at 78. However, I have a ceiling fan in the kitchen, a box fan in the living room and a tower fan in my home office. The combination of the AC and the fans keeps the house very comfortable and the electric bill low.
With cooling the house down during the evening and night, the AC rarely runs during the day. It's first run of the day is usually at 7 PM when the T-Stat drops to 74.
Winter --- 61 all season. I don't care for heat. I feel more comfortable "chilly".
When we have the central air on, it's set @ 73 all the time. But we are also on the electric companys program that allows them to shut our a/c off if the power demand reaches a certain level. The longest it has ever been shut off by WPS is about 5hrs. This usually happens during the day when no one is home, and the house is well insulated, so it works out well for us, and knocks about $8 a month off our bill.[this post was last edited: 6/5/2010-12:28]
I'm fortunate that I live on the first floor of a brick garden apartment. Once I get the place cool, I can throttle the a/c down just to keep the humidity at bay. I have a big through-the-wall unit in my living room and it cools the 4 rooms very well. It's not marked with temps, but I've never yet had to put the thing on full-blast. It's set to "cycle" so the fan isn't running constantly, just when the compressor kicks-in. I have an oscillating fan in the bedroom just to keep the air moving at night.
Upstairs, however has two units running and it's often like a blast furnace up there.
Keep it at a steady 75 day and night. Seems to provide just the right measure of cool and humidity control, which is most important during the Florida summers.
Since I have the dog here in the house and since she is the Queen I keep it at 75 during the day, when I get home for the evening I turn it down to 70 or 72 depending on how hot I am and then leave it there until the next morning when I leave. I also use a ceiling fan and 2 vintage box fans to help keep things circulated.
I really like having the windows open but there are so few times I can do that -- spring = pollen dust coming in , fall = leaf dust.
