I was just wondering what temp you all set your ac to. We have ours at 75, which is a little warm for my liking, but my parents freeze if it is any cooler than that!!

78F all of the time, except at night. Usually the temps here drop down below that at night even if the mid-day temps hit triple digits, so the A/C gets turned off and the windows are opened throughout. Otherwise, if temps don't dip below 80F at night, the windows in the house remain closed and the A/C stays on at 78F.

The only A/C I have

is a small bedroom unit, with single digits on the dial, not temperatures. When I turn it on, I have it set at "arctic," or what's the point? When I lived in apartments with central air, I always kept it about 10F cooler than outdoors.

oh you guys and your "luxury" settings...

...this house has 2 central systems (have friends that have 3 & 4) and I keep them at 77 during the day, 76 for the bedroom system at night...I had a BF a few years ago that inisited on 72 at night...I kicked him out after I got the first electric bill...

The only AC system I have has a maximum setting of "All Windows Open!" Temperatures can vary wildly. Although, at least, the electric use is pretty low!

72 when at home 80 when not

I work in 100+ temp all day and when I get home I want it KOOL! Sure the ele bill is higher but I AM KOOL and comfortable .. many cannot say that. so I AM BLESSED!

Usually, my AC is kept at 78. However, I have a ceiling fan in the kitchen, a box fan in the living room and a tower fan in my home office. The combination of the AC and the fans keeps the house very comfortable and the electric bill low.

Programed Thermostat...

10 AM - 76
7 PM - 74
10 PM - 71

With cooling the house down during the evening and night, the AC rarely runs during the day. It's first run of the day is usually at 7 PM when the T-Stat drops to 74.

Winter --- 61 all season. I don't care for heat. I feel more comfortable "chilly".

When we have the central air on, it's set @ 73 all the time. But we are also on the electric companys program that allows them to shut our a/c off if the power demand reaches a certain level. The longest it has ever been shut off by WPS is about 5hrs. This usually happens during the day when no one is home, and the house is well insulated, so it works out well for us, and knocks about $8 a month off our bill.[this post was last edited: 6/5/2010-12:28]

Dehumidify

I'm fortunate that I live on the first floor of a brick garden apartment. Once I get the place cool, I can throttle the a/c down just to keep the humidity at bay. I have a big through-the-wall unit in my living room and it cools the 4 rooms very well. It's not marked with temps, but I've never yet had to put the thing on full-blast. It's set to "cycle" so the fan isn't running constantly, just when the compressor kicks-in. I have an oscillating fan in the bedroom just to keep the air moving at night.

Upstairs, however has two units running and it's often like a blast furnace up there.

Keep it at a steady 75 day and night. Seems to provide just the right measure of cool and humidity control, which is most important during the Florida summers.

Since I have the dog here in the house and since she is the Queen I keep it at 75 during the day, when I get home for the evening I turn it down to 70 or 72 depending on how hot I am and then leave it there until the next morning when I leave. I also use a ceiling fan and 2 vintage box fans to help keep things circulated.

I really like having the windows open but there are so few times I can do that -- spring = pollen dust coming in , fall = leaf dust.

With programmable thermostat the Ac is:

80F From 9am until 11pm. This makes the upper floors of my house about 83F but I am learning to take it.

77F From 11pm until 6am next morning
78F From 6am until 9am

Before it broke down the other day it was at 72. I hate heat and hate humidity even more. It'll be at least 2 weeks before we get the new system installed so hopefully it doeesn't get too too hot in that time.

I have mine set at 22C in the summer, sometimes 23C if I start to feel chilly and in the winter its set at 22C.

The units if set at 22C will aim to cool the room to 21C, but then cycle off and come back on again when the room temp approaches 23C.

If I set to 23C it will cool the room to 22C and then cycle off and come back on at 24C which is too hot.

If I have guests round they think that 22C is too cold.

I keep ours at 76˚, the house humidity is around 40 to 45%. Before we got this system (Trane Variable speed) I used to keep A/C at 72˚, but with the variable speed we get better humidity control, so 72˚ is getting cool.

If it's really hot out, I bump it up to 78˚ to help out the power company, and I don't like the big slap in the face when I go outside.

A/C running colder than 70˚ and outside tempts below 50˚is not good for it unless it has a "Cold Weather Kit" on it.

77*F in summer when at home, higher when not.

The dehumidifier was set to turn on at 10pm and off at 10am. As it cools off outsdie at night (in this climate) the A/C doen't run as much and the humidty creeps up, which is uncomfortable. The dehumidifer keeps it comfortable. The heat it generates (as every watt used is ultitmately turned into heat) helps turn on the a/c (sooner) resulting in more dehumidification.

We have our winter settings at:

Monday - Friday
- 15c from 11.30pm until 5.30am
- 19c until 8.30 am
- 15c until 5.30pm
- 19c until 11.30pm

Weekends
- 15c from 11.30 until 5.30am
- 19c until 11.30pm

When particularly cold, which it can get in Canberra compared to the rest of Oz, we have a 'hold' button...so regardless of setting we can dial in a temp. and press 'hold'....so we boost it to 21c

...and then we have an open fire that we use about once a week...though it is a major draught creator

..and we don't have central cooling

What does the actual temperature outside have to do with the temperature you set inside.

I.e if its not too cold outside you set to 19C inside but if its really cold outside you boost it to 21C?

Surely if 19C feels comfortable when its not so cold outside then it should feel ok at colder outside temps as the system will come on longer to maintain 19c?

For example my system is set at 22C for summer and winter, and if it gets colder outside in winter it is still left at 22C no matter what.
