The article states that it may have been drug related. I never heard of Heath being involved in that kind of stuff. I always thought of him being a "serious" actor with his eye on his craft.
Positively shocking!

I feel most sad

for his daughter. He had a daughter with the actress from BBM.

As for his life, more, I am sure, will be revealed in the next few weeks/months.

A Lot Already Has Been...

It looks like Ledger's life wasn't what we might have imagined; there are already a lot of stories coming out about substance abuse.

I am reminded of something I've heard quite often in certain meeting rooms: "There is no problem that cannot be made worse by drugs and alcohol."

Really sad.

Wow. I've never even heard of this person before. I had to do a search to find out who he is. It is sad that he died so young and with what seemed to be such promise.

perhaps his grief helped him with his emotional Brokeback performance?

his performance in BB seemed much more real than Gyllenhaal's IMO.

Evening shocker.

Just found out about this myself. Shocking and tragic. Although I'm curious myself, I wish the news people would not speculate on causes until investigation is done. All we know is that he had some sleeping pills on him, but so do a lot of people. My condolences to his family, in Perth, I believe. I enjoyed his work. I was/am looking forward to his version of "The Joker" in the next Batman movie.

Very sad......

I enjoyed him in BrokeBack, I do not watch movies all that much. Had never saw him in a movie before. <p> This clip was shared on another site...and thought you might enjoy it here.

I'm sitting here stunned. This is truly sad and shocking news. I feel really bad for his daughter. She'll not only have to grow up without a father, but she'll have no memory of him.

My thoughts and prayers and with his family and friends.

Mike

All the money, all the fame, all the fortune--and ALL THE DRUGS AND ALCOHOL "combined" seem to be a culprit with these types of folks. I really don't understand it.

This is sad, once again.

We don't really

know what killed him. Since last night, I have read every conceivable speculation ranging from gay-sado-maso games which went awry to drug overdose to suicide.

The only things we really know are that he was a well respected actor, he had a daughter whom he loved and he had never managed to keep a relationship together for long.

At this point, I think it would be fitting to have an Indian style cremation, throwing the paparazzi onto the byre to fuel the flames.

What a loss - there just aren't that many really good dramatic actors of his generation.

Very sad to lose the talent of a great actor. I'm sure his family is devastated, there must be nothing worse in the world than losing a child.

Scandalous situation though, in the apartment of Mary Kate Olsen, naked on a bed with pills strewn about... At least that was the dirt flying around yesterday, it will be interesting to see what more is learned from the autopsy today.

Bad Reporting:

The more I see on this sad situation, the more firmly convinced I become that America's news media has forgotten how to cover a story. Inaccuracies have abounded- The New York Times originally reported that the apartment in which Ledger was found belonged to Mary-Kate Olsen, then had to retract that when Olsen's publicist told them that Ms. Olsen did not own the apartment and had never owned the apartment. Even the Times' headline lacks a basis in fact: "Heath Ledger, Actor, Is Found Dead at 28". As their own story says, he was found unconscious, and could not be revived.

Many stories I've seen are as much speculation as fact. It's getting pretty sad when people who are paid to report the news aren't able to spend a few minutes double-checking their sources, and even sadder when editors don't catch whoppers like the Times headline I mentioned.

At this point, I have decided not to read or watch any more stories about this for a while; it's obviously going to take some time for verifiable facts to emerge. As a media person, I'm embarrassed at the lack of journalistic standards that is on such glaring display right now.

Sandy, you are so right. Last night as I was folding laundry and watching TV, a news teaser advised about Ledger. I shouted "WHAT?????" and my partner in the other room asked me what was up. He immediately pulled up some on line news report and it was just what you described. Speculation without any information on the cause of death. Just a bunch of questions about films Ledger had been in, etc. I left the room and decided I'd wait for the TV news to see if they could do any better. They did, but at that hour nobody knew much. I had not heard any of the Mary Kate falsehoods and in this morning's paper there was no mention of her either. Nor has there been any mention of a drug problem. It must have been the tabloid side reporting that.

I did notice in one clip where it appeared Ledger was being interviewed on some sort of red carpet or post-awards scene, he was kind of twitching nervously. Not full-on Michael J. Fox but still seemed kind of wound up and couldn't keep still. I guess we'll know more once the autopsy is completed.

It's sad regardless. He proved himself in BBM and I'm not saying that just because I'm gay. He became Ennis Del Mar and it's hard to imagine any other actor doing a better job than he did, or even coming close, for that matter. I suspect he performed beyond the director's wildest dreams.

Noonday Meditation

Who among us, after viewing Brokeback Mountain, did not ache for Ennis/Keith, as he wept after holding Jack's shirt and wish that we could reach out to comfort him? And now the sweet tragic irony of Keith grieving for the fictional Jack, as we all grieve for the very real death of Keith, as if the film were a rehearsal for what would come.

Keith is such an incredible talent, but how much of his authentic self was revealed in his portrayal of Ennis?

In our own point in Gay American History right now, how could someone have revealed the aching loneliness and otherness of being gay and not be affected personally by the historic moment in cinema which Brokeback is?

Is Keith bisexual? Could he possibly not be so?

Life often aches, but aren't you glad, especially today, to be alive, and grateful for it?

I sure am.

Whoops, I think you meant Heath, which is short for Heathcliff, his actual first name.

I think he did a great job in BBM too. The Academy Award Nomination proves that. But that was a great movie all around, beautifully filmed, great story development, great actors, etc.

As is usual in these cases, the NYC Medical Examiner has said that it will be at least 7-10 days before anything is known about what the possible cause is.

As for straight boys playing gay boys (Gay for pay?)I thought Queer As Folk was much more shocking in that department than BBM was. But rememeber BBM is film and QAF is television.

Oh for sure we are talking apples & oranges when it comes to QAF vs BBM. I always found QAF to be rather trite and far too implausible far too much of the time. BBM had no such defects from what I could tell, other than not covering Jack & Randall's relationship, which only received a mention in passing by Jack's father. But that's more of a personal wish than a technical issue.
