I know many here like these new fangled water miser's. 20 years ago if you told someone you had to "clean" the washer. They would think you were definately suffering with OCD. Even sick room laundry plus a cup of LCB, done deal. alr2903

I've never...
....ever ever had to run a clean cycle on my washing machine.
It never smells and I never get 'scrud' on clothes.
AND, it would be interesting to know the percentage of liquid detergent v's powder detergent users and their experiences with having to 'clean a washing machine'
alr2903 - I bet that 20yrs ago there were 4 factors that impacted on peoples machines and prevented them needing to be 'cleaned'
- more people washed in hotter water than now (temperatures have dropped)
- they used more water (thirtier machines)
- detergents had more/better active ingredients
AND
- more people used powder v liquid
On the thirstier machines part though, Europeans don't tend to have the smelly/scruddy washer syndrome, so this may have more to do with temperature/detergent activity and type (powder/liquid) than water consumption
