A wonderful find! A GE Versatronic dryer that matches my GE Programmed Washer with MiniWash. I had found the washer over 20 yrs ago, but never the dryer. There was an electric dryer posted on here a while back by a member (who incorrectly claimed it was oil fired, remember?!!!!), but that is the only time I had ever seen a match to my washer. Finding this was an event........

I found this at my upcoming estate sale in N. Canton for a former Hoover employee. (Yes, vac folks, there are LOTS and LOTS of vacuum related items AND vintage HOOVER historical items in this upcoming sale!) The lady Im doing the sale for offered me the dryer if I would replace it with another one. Naturally, I was thrilled!

The "HEART" of the Versatronic Control. This shot was taken from the inside of the dryer. The two round discs are thermostats for the different temperatures and the serpentine design is the actual "sensor" that "feels" the clothes as they are tumbling. Its hard to see from this photo, but there are acutally two circuits on this serpentine board........

Now this model dryer, which was the top of the line GE in 1968 has something I have NEVER seen on a GE of this vintage before.....It has Back Lighted Controls,,,,,,,, The backing graphics on each of the dial and push buttons controls are Lucite and are lit from behind by the florescent light! I turned the flash off to try and get the effect, which in person is quite pleasing.......

2008 certainly has been a good year for finding dryers.....I have a load washing in the GE washer, and the dryer will be getting its first try out in its new home. GE sure made good appliances!
 
Jimmy, congratulations!!! Wow, a long patient wait of 20 years. I can't help but think your mom is looking down smiling and pleased with herself she helped this find be located to lighten your hurting heart!!
 
Thanks Bob, thats very nice of you to say. Its especially fitting, since the washer was my Mom's. Im sure she would be pleased to know her son finally found the matching dryer!......
 
Congratulations!

I was never a big GE fan, but being on here over the years and seeing many cool styles, I am really liking GE and I love, love, LOVE this dryer. The back lighting is way cool! We've said it on here a million times....they just don't make em' like they used to!

Congratulations again! And now, if the Dryer Gods would please shine this way with a harvest gold electric dryer to match my 1977 1/18! LOL!!

WOW, Jimmy that dryer is in amazing shape!!! Congrats and enjoy. I had no idea that early gas GE dryers were rare, I will definitely keep a close watch out.

Does this mean that the burner fires up just like a cigarette lighter??

I LOVED this style--GE featured their Programmed Washer for many years but I think this must have been the only year that the dryer looked just like the washer. Never knew about the back-lit controls. Boy would I like to find a couple just like those!

An old dream is to find the first Heavy Duty 18 Model with the all-blue tub. I remember Macy's had one of those paired with the 31" huge dryer in Coppertone. One of the Masters of Saybrook College had that same pair in their apartment. Back then I was too shy about my appliance obsessions to even ask to look at them. They must have gone to the New Haven dump decades ago.

3 speed agiation/sky blue speckled porcelain wash tub

Hey Jimmy!,

I know how it feels to find a gem like this!My sister,Leslie,had these in coppertone along with a matching dishwasher,wall oven with P7 self cleaning cycle and asbestus shield in between its double pane window,4 burner cooktop with Sensi-Temp and overhead controls and a 19 cu ft.bottom drawer freezer refrigerator with ice maker.She replaced the dishwasher with a 1980 KitchenAid Superba(which she claims she hated)and the washer took its final dump the same year.She replaced it and the matching electric dryer with the new Whirlpool belt drive with the electronic touch controls.The washer kept having issues with clothes like baby socks going over the inner tub and clogging the pump.The dryer drum rusted out in less than 2 years.
