I've seen a posting from a few years back touching on this issue, but not quite addressing my situation. It seems like a simple fix.

I have a GE Spacemaker 2420D3 TT style washer-dryer combo. The upper part of the agitator or agitator barrel housing the filter comes loose during the wash cycle causing ineffective clothes movement. It also occasionally pops off during the spin cycle.

This part comes off simply by pulling it upward and doesn't appear to "snap" in place when I put it back on .. ie there is nothing securing it. There are no bolts or stripped plastic bits apparent.

How do I secure this to the main agitator so it once again works properly? Also, I am able to turn the agitator in either direction when the machine is off. Is this uncommon for this model .. it seems like all I need to do is secure the barrel somehow for it to work again.

Sorry you have not yet been helped.

Are you sure a little locking tab did not break off inside the barrel? It does lock into place. You have looked inside the barrel for little plastic tabs? It has to be pushed firmly down for it to lock. When John gets back from CA, he will probably be able to help you after the first of the week.

I've inspected the inside of the barrel and there are no loose parts or places where the plastic has broken. The only two plastic tabs are those shown on the lower part of the agitator in the photo, to either side of the nut. There are two of them and they can be pulled outward (carefully) but this does not secure the top portion.

As a temporary fix I wrapped some masking table around the top bit of the the lower half and that seemed to work well for now at least ..

thanks for your help.

Loose agitator top and filter

The white plastic screen is what keeps this part in place and while it may not appear broken the entire removable agitator top section needs replacement. This machine is made by WP and if you use a WP model # the part may be less expensive, but it will be white instead of gray. The WP model # to use is LTE5243DQW-O.

An awesome price. I have to say I looked around the Internet for a while trying to come up with a fix for this problem. You guys put all others in the obscure world of washer/dryer related sites to shame. Like comparing a Formula One car to a Model T.

Placed the order at Sears Parts and it came to under $40 with shipping and tax. Hell of a lot better than starting out at $58 and change then adding the rest. I'm pretty sure it's the right part. The online assistant described it as the "whole filter" and the package is 11" by 5.5". Thanks again for all your knowledge.

Agitator comes up when running washer

I have the GE Spacemaker model wsm2420TAACC. Diagram for the associated machine and area is here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/ge-...WSM2420TAACC/0432/0152000/G0205267/00011.html

The filter (Key #78) with cap (key #76), which sits on top of the agitator, comes up when washer is running. When I chatted with the service person at searspartsdirect.com, I was told I need to replace the screw and nut (key #77 and #81). Photos show the washer/dryer unit, the filter with cap and the inside of the filter. However, I am not sure this will hold the filter down. Does this have "dogs" or tabs I need to order? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
