Does anyone know if the agitator shaft can be removed from the transmission while it is still within the spin shaft? Whirlpool washer

I have the transmission out of the washer however all the attempts at freeing the failed basket drive assembly has failed. My thinking is to remove the whole shaft from the transmission and then smack it out of the spin basket drive assembly using a hammer or even possibly a hydraulic press. it is really stuck. This is really hard to do with the transmission still attached.

May be possible.  Look at the photos in the service manual that you presumably received.  The transmission cover would have to come off with the spin components atop it, bringing the agitator shaft along IF there's nothing else inside the transmission that would prevent it from coming out.

Shafts of four internal components protrude through the transmission cover: the agitator shaft, the agitator shift fork (through which the agitator cam bar passes), the sector gear (onto which the wigwag mounts), and the main drive pinion (onto which the transmission pulley mounts).  The transmission pulley, wigwag, and cam bar(s) would normally be removed first, which allows the related internal parts to remain inside the transmission base.

Someone with more years of hands-on experience can confirm or deny or expand on any or all of this detail.

I had the same issue and had to remove the transmission from the basket drive while still in the machine. The spin tube was so rusted that it would not move past the bearings easily. I had to pound for about 2 hours using a socket sized correctly, lots of liquid wrench and a hammer. The bottom bearing ended up coming out with the spin tube so it saved me a step in the long run. I know others sometimes are able to twist with the transmission in place to get them out too but I think mine was too rusty.

It will come, just keep pounding

Good luck
