This actually might be doable for me.

It's an Amana 14 in White, absolutely the perfect size for single me and just the right color. Price is a very reasonable $75.

It's in Iowa City, not all that far away, but I have a 4WD issue with my Tahoe and will have to see if I can get it sorted fast.

Anyway, this is a real possibility. Wish it was local but you can't have everything.

Does anyone know anything about the intermittent compressor noise mentioned by the seller? John?

Compressor Noise

It could be normal.  A few fridges I have owned, including the current 2009 KA, have been noisy after kicking in following the defrosting period.

For $75, being your dream fridge, and within reasonable fetching distance, I think it's worth getting -- if the interior is decent and complete.

"if the interior is decent and complete."

And if it has the necessary set-up for an icemaker. I've requested more info. I am not dragging a refrigerator all over Hell's half acre to end up without an icemaker again.

Kenny:

Is that serious? I really wouldn't like to live with a rattle, and I'd definitely prefer that it be addressed. If the mount is something that can't be replaced without significant expense (it's not like I am qualified to mess with the internals of a compressor), then I might be better off passing on this unit. It will already cost some money to make the necessary road trip.

I had an amana for 18 years. A power surge took out a circulating fan. I needed a different refridgerator so I didn't fix it. (I know dumb).

I have to say it was somewhat noisy after the defrost cycle. But got quiet as it continued to run. There were some weired thumping noises and such.

My aunt in Maine had a 14 CU. FT. Amana box like that, too! Hard to believe that she could keep a lot of stuff in it like she did, but there was her, my uncle and cousin...

Don't know what there is now; hadn't been over in what's going on THIRTY-YEARS...!

Update!

The seller just emailed me some terrific photos of the interior. I probably shouldn't share them here without her permission; she didn't put them in a public forum.

But I can tell you - the fridge appears to be complete, with all its shelves and its crispers. There is an icemaker setup, though no icemaker is installed. It appears reasonably clean, though these are phone photos.

I'm getting more intrigued!

Dave

That's pretty impressive about your aunt - that she was able to keep herself, her husband AND one offspring in a 14 cu. ft. refrigerator.

Oh! Wait....

After re-reading your post I'm guessing that's not exactly what you were saying.

hehe

Go get it Sandy!

Stop your stalling and bring it home!

Sandy, all I can say is, I have a mid 80's WCI Frigidaire in the basement, that has the bad internal mount in the compressor. It rattles noticeably when it shut's down.

I picked that 'fridge up about 1993 or so, and it's been keeping perfect temperature since. It may quit tomorrow, or last another 21 years. Who knows?

If the price was right, and it was what I was looking for, I wouldn't hesitate. Like I said, it may be something simple, refrigerant lines rubbing somewhere, or a defrost pan vibrating. You could ask when they notice the noise. All the ones I've heard rattle when it shuts off. If it makes noise when it's running, it's probably not the mount.

My '66 Amana rattles a bit when the compressor shuts off.  I don't think much of it.  And yes, the compressor is noticeably louder when it first kicks on, but after about a minute or two, it smooths out once all the pressures have reached optimum levels.

Wow Sandy, it's so great to find a dream machine, and in good shape, and running, and even relatively close (enough to pick it up rather than risking and paying for third party shipping)... It MUST be meant to be! Great find, your dream kitchen is coming together with the stove and now the fridge!

We Shall See....

....If I get to make the attempt this weekend.

The weather is doing strange and terrible things here right now - we got about half an inch of slushy sleet this afternoon. I crept home at about three miles per hour. There is to be snow on top of that - estimates of how much vary from 1 inch (a couple of weather sites) to 8 inches (the local NBC affiliate, famous for scare-mongering).

That damn groundhog's gotta go.

Groundhog

I thought he didn't see his shadow this year.  If that was the case, the situation east of the Rockies since 2/2/14 suggests he didn't get the memo.

You should get that fridge though!
